"Mommy? Who was that mean lady papa was talking to?" The woman's eyes shifted to the window where outside you could see a small, perfect girl, half her age was walking to a gaudy muscle car.
"No one my darling, no one." She said to the confused toddler. "Then why does she come over so much?" The innocent little girl thought. "That's something you'd have to ask your dad Sera, because I can't seem to understand it myself these days." A humorless laugh. "Oh god! Why won't he just tell me. Why does he lie, it's not like I don't know." A few tears start to well up. "What happened, we were happy, in love. Then that little she-devil came waltzing in."
"Mommy, what's wrong. Did I do something I shouldn't have again." Little Sera asked, sad she upset her mom. "Of course not sweetie, you've done nothing to be sad about. This is a mommy daddy thing alright? And don't worry, everything will be okay."
Little did either of them know that everything only got worse. Sera's dad refused to make amends and stopped trying to be apart of the family he started. Eventually when Sera's mom couldn't see it working anymore she divorced him, sharing custody over their daughter and silently hating ever second with the man who cheated for half their marriage.
As time went on Sera found out what had happened. When she did, however, she sided with her mom and cut ties with her good for nothing dad, living her days wondering why he did it.
Luck being on her side she eventually found out. Having been forced to see her father, as dual custody demands, they got into a fight filled with angry words, tears and a cherry of betrayal to top it off. At the peak of the fight she had grabbed his arm and yelled for the answer she so desperately wanted. How she got her answer was not what she had expected.
She was looking into his memories, seeing everything from five minutes ago to his childhood. Even without know what was going on she knew the answer was there. She looked into his head and watched as his memories floated by until she found the one that held the truth. As she peered into the memory any and all hope vanished. The reason she had been hoping for wasn't there, or anywhere. Why? Because her father didn't have one. He had simply ruined half her life because he had wanted too. He had simply seen that home wrecker and forgotten about his family. He had cheated oh so many times, and why? Because it was fun, and he, at the time decided that his family wasn't worth it.
Knowing the truth Sera abandoned any positive feelings she had ever felt for that ruthless and uncaring person she had once called a father and exited his mind.
When she was out time, which she hadn't known was frozen, resumed. Instead of continuing their argument she simply told him what she felt.
All the pent up anger was released into only a few words. "I hate you" She had never known true hate before that day. And wouldn't forget that feeling till death did she part. No, she would not forget what happened that day, nor would she forget what happened next.

                                         ~The powers emerge~

At the young age of twelve Sera had a big problem. She had turned into a fish person in the bathtub. While her mind molding power had been a surprise as well she had gotten over it pretty quickly. Whereas today she felt like the world had shattered and chaos taken over.
Firstly, she had no idea why she was part fish. I mean if it was genetic wouldn't her mom have said something, like "Oh yeah, you might end up a fish person someday" or "Have I mentioned that Aunt Shellie is a mermaid and you could be too"? But alas, that had not happened, leaving Sera to figure it out on her own.
Secondly, how to get back to normal. If she remembered correctly she was thinking about some mermaid book when this happened, so maybe if she though about human Sera she could magic herself to normal. Then again after many attempts of that not working, that might not be the answer.
In another attempt to fix herself she tried to get out of the tub. Key word being "tried" as she could hardly even move an inch.
Well that didn't work. She thought to herself. Fine then, if I can't exit the water then why not drain it? So in an effort to empty the tub she succeeded in turning over, exposing the plug. Only problem was she had turned away from it.
Not there. Nope, not there either. Ouch, stupid faucet. FINALLY!!! Got it! That she had, and as the water drained she found that this plan as well had done nothing to help her.
After about a half an hour of sitting and struggling to move she was completely dry. And after no thoughts to trigger her to return to human form she gave up and tried her failed attempts again, and finding a very different result. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON! She screamed internally. Why did it work now? I mean I'm dry I guess but why does that matter? You know what, I probably shouldn't question the "why I changed back" part, instead I'll ask this ... WHY DID I TURN INTO A FISH AND HOW DO I STOP IT?
She never gets the answer to the question, and through the years learns only a few things.
     A) NEVER tell anyone, ever.
     B) She can manipulate her mer-looks at will.
     C) Singing is a no-no. People could get hurt.
     D) If anyone finds out, mind molding is way more effective then singing.
     E) Every and all her powers are more powerful when she's in mermaid form.
There are a few more lesser notes, but those weren't deemed important enough to add to the list. Those few include ... the ability to, as a human, hold her breath for an up of four hours, swim faster than a tiger shark, and change her appearance.
Sera quickly learns how to master all these tricks and uses them to her advantage. Swimming just fast enough to beat everyone else on the swim team. Being the best at cosplay ever. With all these powers Sera also has tough choices to make. Telling her mom and friends or not and erasing all evidence of her powers, including people's memories. Having power makes any choices she makes have twice the weight.
With her middle school life ahead of her, she knows the consequences and embraces them. Living two lives, both with heartache of their own. And it only get worse from here.
