"You should try the chicken," a girl to my right said to me, "It's delicious."
The girl wore a wine red evening gown and she was smiling at me. My eyes shifted down to a gleaming plate of steaming potatoes, bright green spinach, beets, and a sickly looking chicken breast all perfectly arranged.
"I'm not sure, it doesn't seem to be cooked right," I replied. Scanning the room, I found we sat at a long elegant table with many other finely dressed people whom were conversing lightly with each other.
"Oh, it's only chicken. It's fine, see?" the girl took a bite of her chicken. When she swallowed she looked at me and shrugged.
"Alright," I said unsure. I cut a piece from the breast. The inside seemed slightly purple. The girl leaned over and pointed to the meat with a bony finger.
"I heard they grilled it with lavender," she said, seeing the look on my face.
I brought the piece of chicken to my lips and took the smallest bite, but when I tried to swallow, it caught in my throat. The girl watched me closely.
It was burning now, my mouth and throat were on fire! I tried to cough up the piece of chicken, but it wouldn't come. I couldn't breathe! I looked at the girl for help, but her smile only widened as she watched me. What was going on?
"What did you do to me!" I wanted to scream, but no air would escape. My entire body went rigid. I felt my eyes go to the back of my head, and found my face in the potatoes. Everyone around me shrieked, but in the midst of the chaos, I heard laughter.
