Enlistment was a long process for many, but not I. Since my family has fought in so many wars, they had already started inputting my information years ago. Everyone in town was expecting me to fight from the moment I was born. I never really understood why. Is that all people judge me on? My family?
Besides the point. After my papers were approved, I got a letter in the mail telling me where to go. 4348 Pebbleville Road, one of the most prestigious training camps in the country. If you were sent there, you were bound for battle very soon. A dream spot for soldiers, and hell for everyone else.
Pulling into the parking lot, I could immediately see someone hail me over. I drove closer to the unknown rock and... Wait, is that...?
"Felipé!" He shouts. "It's so nice to see you!" I put my car in park and hop out as quick as possible.
"Henrock!" I gave the man a quick hug and pat on the back. Henrock is my godfather who took care of me for a year after my dad was mur-er, died. "How are you doing bro?"
"I'm doing great, son." He always called me son as kid so I'd feel better. "I've been waiting for you to enlist for years! I just knew you'd come through."
"Yeah, well. Guess it runs in the family." I nervously chuckled at that remark. Everyone said that, so all I can do is laugh with them. At least I can pretend it's okay.
"Hey! I should probably help you to your room, right?" Henrock started unpacking my car and taking my bags. I picked up the rest and followed him into the building.
The building was cold. Freezing, actually. The metal floors clanged with every step I took, practically screaming in the silence. At the very end of the narrow hallway we stopped.
"Here's your room, son." Henrock unlocked the door and walked into the room, setting down my bags. "The general should be here soon, just stay and wait a while. Need anything?" I stood for a second, partially blocking out what he said while I let everything set in.
"What? Oh, no. But thank you, Henrock. For everything." He smiled at me as his eyes began to swell with tears.
"It's no problem lil' dude. I'll see you later." He quietly closed the door behind him.
I let my back hit my mattress with no hesitation. Looking over at the clock, I could see it's getting late.
Click. A voice comes from outside the door as it swings open.
"Felipé? You here? It's the general."
I freeze.
I know your name.
