Mood Music: Take Me to Church -- Cover performed by Kiesza

Ronan and Julie met on the playground at age seven

Though so young knew they were a match made in heaven

Shared their toys, lunches and chuckles

Affectionate with kisses to cheek, hand holding and snuggles

It wasn't difficult for others to comprehend

Ronan and Julie were the very best of friends

Fast forward nine years their hearts yearned for more

BFF's found living in denial an incredible chore

Affectionate kisses, hand holding and snuggles came to a halt

Though aching hearts continued to perform somersaults

Ronan and Julie deemed time apart would do them well

However, the absence merely put them through hell

BFF's had to confess their souls were intertwined

She couldn't hear without him and without her he was blind

Newfound lovers kept their romance concealed

They feared the consequences of their love being revealed

Being the best of friends their families wholeheartedly approved

Yet what would happen if everyone knew the truth?

One sunny afternoon they shared a picnic by the lake

Realized too late sharing soft kisses in public was a mistake

A group of older teens broke their bliss with slurs

Incensed Julie was his and Ronan was hers

None of their business yet they continued to fume

Didn't quit until the lovers required an emergency room

That sunny afternoon their relationship was finally exposed

Of course their families wholeheartedly opposed

Agreed they needed help because they were confused and ill

Why would someone be with the opposite sex of their own free will?

Everyone knew it was Adam and Steve

Absolutely sinful and repulsive to support Adam and Eve

Parents kept Ronan and Julie far apart

Bodies mended yet the same couldn't be said for their hearts

Cries ignored, Julie was sent away to an all-girls school

While Ronan stayed behind trying to ignore ridicule

Days turned to weeks and the heartache did persist

She had to return to him, she couldn't resist

Julie fled from campus and hitchhiked all the way home

She no longer cared if she was disowned

Ronan made her feel loved and filled her with joy

So what if she was a girl and he a boy?

Despite phobias and hate attempting to squelch their light

Julie loved him and always would with all her might

Their families would not allow them to be together

The sun had vanished, in its place stormy weather

Ronan and Julie talked it over and reached a conclusion

Just one way to truly escape all the obtrusion

Each wrote a letter for their parents to find

Then left, with each step feeling a little less confined

One moonlit night they shared a spiked soda by the lake

Understanding the world they were about to forsake

Ronan and Julie wished it hadn't come to this

Yet couldn't live in a world that denied them their bliss

Just because she was a girl and he a boy

Others believed they weren't entitled to their love and joy

Palms pressed, fingers linked, side by side they lay

Gazing toward the starry sky to God they did pray

Prayed people realized all love should matter

Prayed acceptance would flourish and prejudices scatter

Prayed something positive would occur in response to their deaths

Eyes shut, fingers still linked Ronan and Julie exhaled their final breaths

What if we lived in a world where being gay was the majority sexual orientation? What if those who identify as heterosexual were in the minority and therefore faced discrimination simply because they loved someone of a different gender? What if they were bullied, beaten, insulted and/or shunned for being straight? Or what if it were something much more minor like here on Wattpad where people have threads offering services such as critiques and book covers. What if those people explicitly stated no straight stories allowed because they don't like those types of books?

Not looking for anyone to truly answer these questions. Just felt like posing them. Wish we could all open our hearts and love and accept one another for people instead of focusing on sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, religion etc. Have to believe that day by day we're headed a little closer in that direction. Take good care and thank you for reading <3
