Chapter one: How the story of Ryder and I trying to kill each other begins.
I sat in the waiting room, tapping my foot impatiently. I had been in this room plenty of times before, it didn't intimidate me even though it was supposed to. I could see some of the younger students trying to act tough but you could clearly see the fear in their eyes. Rookies, I thought, rolling my eyes.
"Roxanne." The sectary said, peering over her glasses at me with beady eyes. "Why does it not surprise me that you are here? She's ready to see you."
I smirk at her. "Janine. It's because everyone in this part of the building loves me." I say back dryly. I throw my shoulders back and sling my back pack over my shoulder as I hold my head up high, walking into the principal's office.
That same look of disappointment washes over Mrs Owens face as I enter her usual disorganized office. Piles upon piles of paper are spread over every inch of her desk and a stack of books sits precariously on the edge of the wooden cabinet that occupies the corner of the room. She gestures to the straight-back chair in front of her desk whilst trying to sort through some files. I'm positive she's looking for my record.
"This time I'm skipping the lecture and getting straight to the point" She looks me straight in eye. "You've been getting into far too many fights over this past year and I know that you have lost your parents, truly I sympathize,"
I hold my hand up to stop her from going any further about my parents, that was crossing into dangerous territory. She continues "but that doesn't account for your actions." I just nod along like I haven't heard this all before.
"Roxanne, you're suspended until further notice." What? I'm suspended Oh god; I'm going to be in so much shit.
"But-"
"No buts Roxanne, I've already contacted your aunt and she said she was sending someone to pick you up. Please go wait outside the main building for your ride." I stare at her dumbfounded for a second before grabbing my back pack off the ground, I storm out of Mrs Owen office, not bothering to say bye.
I decide to take a detour to the vending machine to kill time. It's not like my ride was going to be here any time soon, knowing my Aunt she probably got some ex-boyfriend to pick me up. I place the coins in the slot, waiting for my candy bar and an energy drink to fall down the slot.
I walk down the school halls by myself. I tend to keep to myself, I guess that was just the inner spy in me trying to stay in the background which was kind of hard considering how many fights I get into and how I spend half my time in the principal's office. Heck I was on first name basis with the secretary.
I push open the set of double doors at the end of the hallway and breathe in the fresh afternoon air. Most people had cleared out by now since school had ended half an hour ago.
I scan the area, partly because it had been instilled into me at a young age and partly because I was looking for my mysterious ride.
I notice a crowd of girls clustered around a sleek, black, Mercedes Benz M-class with a V-6 engine and leather interior. I drool over the car a little. Walking closer to the commotion, I begin to understand why the girls are crowded around it, it's not because they admired the car like me but that they were drooling over some boy. I snort, rolling my eyes at the whole scene. Typical, I think. I wonder if he is a new student here. He looks to be around seventeen, maybe eighteen. Sure, he wasn't bad looking. He had amazingly deep, grey eyes like steel with messy, thick raven hair. I would have said he was attractive if it wasn't for the arrogant and condescending smirk on his face. I make a face, it ruined his beauty. His eyes met mine. "Are you the infamous Roxanne Knight?"
I swear I see every pair of female eyes turn my way enviously, great so much for being a chameleon.
I raise an eyebrow and try not showing my disgust as he scans down my body. "Who's asking?" He gives me a dry look.
"Just as charming as your aunt said you were." I narrow my eyes at him, my mouth hanging slightly open. This was the guy picking me up?
"So are you getting in or are you not done drooling over me yet?" He says, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
"I was not drooling" I mentally swear at myself for not coming up with anything more intelligent. What's happened to all my witty comebacks, huh?
Chuckling to himself, he pulls the car door open for me, gesturing for me to get in.
"If you think I'm getting in that car with you, you have another thing coming."
"And what do you think I'm going to do to you? C'mon get in the car, Roxanne"
"Clearly you've never heard of stranger danger" Rolling his eyes at me, he does a much unexpected thing. Taking me well by surprised, he wraps his arms around my waist and practically throws me in the car. Slamming the door behind him, he slides into the driver's seat and sticks the key in the ignition, starting up the car.
I try the doors, but I see his hand shoots out and puts the child lock on. I glare at him.
"Who the hell do you think you are?! This is kidnapping! And could also be sexual assault!" I scream at him.
"Ryder Daniels" He winks at me in the rear view mirror and with that we're speeding out of the parking lot. I see him rolling his eyes from my peripheral vision. "Relax little mermaid. Save the screaming for later." He smirks. And this is how the story of Ryder and I trying to kill each other begins...
