Claire's P.O.V.

My alarm goes off, and before I can even open my eyes, I'm ready for today to be over.   This is going to be rough.  A stupid essay in English, a stupid test in Algebra, AND a really exciting choir performance tonight at 8.

Ugh.

I start flopping like a dead fish or something and realize I'm stuck in my stupid blankets.  I flop a little too much and end up falling flat on my face.  I'm such an idiot.

After I finally manage to untangle myself from my crap-ton of blankets --- they arrreee soft though, like way soft.  Maybe I should just skip school.. Amanda does that sometimes.. Hmmmmmm

Yeah, no.. Can't skip school; stupid tests and stupid essay and stupid.. I mean really exciting performance.

My mop of stupid hair is a mess, like I kinda look like a lion or a troll or something-- I'M A TRION!! Yeah, no I just need to stop. I drag my feet, absorbed in bunny slippers, and start walking slowly to the kitchen to see Manda and mom.

Neither are awake.. Normally Amanda's the first awake, she goes for a run every morning and when she gets back her loud singing coming from the bathroom wakes the entire neighborhood.

See if it's one thing Amanda and I do well, it's sing.  Ever since the 3rd grade, I've gotten every solo I auditioned for.  This year I plan on trying out for the school's musical The Little Mermaid.  And I mean, not to brag or anything, but I'm totally going to get Ariel.  There's like no talent in the 7th grade.  Especially from McKenzie Bumwater.  Yeah her last name is Bumwater and she thinks she's alllllll that. Like stop your last name is Bumwater.

I knock on Amanda's door and receive no answer. Weird. I knock again, harder this time.. still nothing.

I call out to her and warn her that if she doesn't answer, I'll cut off her hair... still no answer.

Hmmm normally that's the deal breaker.

I walk in and see her lying on her bed, still covered in all of her blankets, and at a quick glance she looks totally fine.  I look closer and a scream catches in the back  of my throat.

Her face is calm and pale.

Her blue- green eyes are closed.

Her tongue is sticking out ever so slightly.

And she isn't breathing.

Her chest isn't moving up and down in a rhythm like it would be if she were sleeping.

I take her shoulders in my hands and shake her gently.

Nothing.

I shake her harder and her head falls to the side and then rolls backwards.

I lay her back down softly and fall to the ground.

Every nightmare I've ever had is coming true all at once and I feel like I can't breathe.

"AMANDA!!!!!!" I scream

"MOM!!!!!!!"

"MOM HURRY UP!!! MOM AMANDA ISN'T BREATHING!!!"

"AMANDA!!!!"

"mom....."
