My workload had increased significantly ever since Rita's idea became a reality. We received numerous e-mails and letters from our readers on a daily basis. True to her word, Rita helped me with some of the questions. Nigel also helped me. Surprisingly, he gave some reallly good answers.
Nigel and I had developed a really close relationship over the past few weeks. He had this kind of bond and we just got along well with each other.
I always go to Nikki for advice on almost anything. It's amazing how we can talk on almost any topic. This was just one of the days I had to get advice from her. We arranged to have ice cream at the local ice cream shop.
"Hey, Nikki", I said and took a seat next to her.
"Kayla! It's so nice to see you!" Kayla said and gave me a big hug.
We went on to talk about random stuff.
"Can I ask a question?" I asked Nikki.
"Sure", Nikki said.
"So there's this new guy at work and we've become really close. I think I'm falling in love with him but I don't know. I think my emotions are running all over the place. I also don't want to make the first move because I'm not sure about all this", I told Nikki.
"Be patient. I'm sure you'll figure out your emotions as time goes on. Just look for opportunities to spend time with him in his favourite activities."
"You're telling me to be patient?! I'm twenty-eight and still single!"
"These things take time, Kayla. If this doesn't work out, there are other men out there."
After our conversation was over, I drove home. I plugged my earphones in my ear and played some music. I sank into the sofa, my feet tapping to the beat. Suddenly, the music stopped. I looked at the phone and saw the calller ID. It was my mum. I ignored the call. I picked the call o the fourth ring.
"Hello, Mum", I said.
"Why didn't you pick the calll?" Mum asked.
"I was asleep", I lied.
"Anyways, has he proposed? I'll come down so we can plan the wedding together."
"Mum, there is no wedding. We broke up."
"Why?"
"I don't know. Look, Mum, I'm really busy."
"What do you mean you don't know? You know I've been looking forward to the the day he'll propose to you and you just broke up."
"Mum, I'm really busy."
"So are you looking for a new boyfriend? Are you meeting new people? Because..." Mum started to say.
I couldn't take it any longer and hang up on her. I buried my face in my hands. Mum and I never got along since the day I had decided to make my own decisions. She didn't want me to work at the fashion magazine. She wanted me to be a lawyer, doctor, teacher or other professional. Knowing my mother, she would come down here to have a little talk.
As I was sitting down thinking about my mum, realisation dawned on me. I'm twenty-eight and still single! I've tried relationship after relationship but I had nothing to prove for it. I felt like a failure. I just hoped Nikki's advice worked because that was the only thing that was the only thing that gave me an assurance that things were going to be better.
