(The dragon's p. o. v.)

For a tense moment, the human boy just stood there and stared at him, and he, not knowing what else to do, stared back. Normally, he would have just flown away, but something made him hesitate, the boy seemed…familiar.

Suddenly, interrupting his thoughts, the small boy took a small step forward and uncertainly waved his hand like he was swatting at a fly with his hand sideways, and said a single word, his voice quavering, “hello.”

This, at first, greatly confused him. What was the human doing? He didn’t think he meant him any harm. Then he realized what “hello” meant, his lessons with the dragon elders on the human tongue had been worth it after all.

He lowered his head so he could see the boy’s face and in his best voice, he replied “hello.” The boy gasped, and then grinned back at him saying, “I didn’t know you could talk!” It took him a while to process what he’d said, then he replied, “I learned how to talk like you,… they call me Faustus, who you?”

The boy replied “my names Nicko-“ then the boy Nicko stopped midspeach and once again started to stare intently at him, he seemed to be thinking ferociously.

He couldn’t shake the felling that he knew this human…suddenly, he realized where he thought he’d seen this face before, looking at the human’s features more closely. He wondered if this could possibly be the same boy.

Faustus looked around, scanning the treetops until he saw what he was looking for. He went over to the fruit tree, he still remembered what kind it had been, even thought it had been years ago. He plucked a fruit from its branches and gently rolled it over to Nicko.

Staring at the fruit, then at him again, the Nicko whispered, “I’ve seen you before.” Faustus felt a burst of happiness within him, “yes,” he said with a smile. “When? Where? How? Please tell me,” Nicko begged.

And so he told him, slowly translating in his mind as he went, however painful the memory had been, however much he’d tried not to think about it over the years, he recalled it and relived it all once again, narrating the story to Nicko.

When he got to the part about Ricochi’s death, he had to stop and compose himself, “I'm sorry” Nicko said when he finished, as if he was responsible for what had happened, although it did make him feel better; to tell someone about it and have them understand-even though it was just a puny human boy-, to know that not all humans were bad.

Faustus was about to reply when they heard a faraway voice calling out “Nickolai,” the boy at once seemed to realize how long he’d been there and he got up holding the fruit to his chest.

Nicko looked at him and Faustus could tell he had to go, but didn’t want to, and Faustus didn’t want him to either. “Go, they call you” he told him. “Can we meet here tomorrow?” he asked, looking up at him. “I will be waiting,” he replied.
