"Why the hell are we called 'Ghost Team', again?"
"It sounds cool. trust me."
James Oswyn and Tes Dexter had been friends for as long as either of them could remember. When they were 6, they agreed that one day, they would hunt ghost together, no matter what happened. Their first 'hunt' was 12 years after that, and it was a hunt they would not soon forget.
"I'm not sure this house is actually even haunted." Tes had some suspicions about this lead, and they stemmed primarily from the fact that James had learned about this haunted house from some elementary schoolers who were daring each other to go inside.
"Look, this is an old AND abandoned house! It's practically impossible for it to NOT be haunted!"
"Just because it's old and abandoned doesn't make it haunted. People have to die for there to be Gho-"
Tes was interrupted by a loud noise coming from that basement. It sounded like something was knocked over.
"What were you saying about this place not being haunted?" James asked snarkily.
"That could have been anything. Cats probably live down ther-"
Tes was cut off again, but this time by their EMF reader going off.
"What was that, Tes? I can't hear you over all of these GHOSTS!"
"I'm afraid if I say anything else, the ghost will kill one of us," Tes smirked.
" Heh, yeah. Maybe you should just stop talking then."
The EMF reader kept getting louder the closer they got to the basement. The door to the basement was locked, but flimsy enough to be kicked down. James, being a proficient kickboxer, knocked the door in with ease.
"Are you ready to go down there,Tes?"
"As ready as i'll ever be."
James took the first step down the stairs. They creaked loudly with each step.
"Man, this ghost is going to hear us coming. Creaky stairs are the worst."
"We lost the element of surprise when you kicked the door down."
"Oh yeah, I guess you're right."
"When am I not right."
"There it is! That cocky attitude! You know, if you don't work on that, you lose all your friends."
"I guess I'm lucky that I only have one to lose then."
" What! You have tons of friends! You have... uh... Yeah. Just me."
Another sound came from the basement, this time a lot louder.
" How are we going to handle this, Tes?"
" You distract the ghost, and I'll look for the remains. Once I find them, I'll burn them, and that'll get rid of the ghost problem here."
"You make it sound so easy. I guess I should get on with the distracting."
James walked out into the basement and began to look around for the ghost. Tes followed and started looking for a body. The basement was lined with shelves filled mostly with old food and tools. There was an area off to the side that had some old pieces of furniture in it. Both were having very little luck, when a shadowy figure appeared in front of James. It grabbed a can of beans and threw it at James' head. James ducked out of the way and threw a punch at the figure. His fist went right through the ghost.
"Tes! I need you to hurry up over there!" James shouted
"Im working on it!"
As Tes was replying to James, he stubbed his toe on something. He looked down and saw that it was the corpse he had been looking for. He got out his oil and poured it all over the body. James had trouble as the ghost relentlessly threw cans at him.
"Really hope you are almost done over there!" James yelled while dodging a can.
"Shouldnt be too long now" Tes replied.
Tes pulled out his lighter and went to light the body on fire. As he was lighting the body, he heard a loud sound coming from where the fight was going on. The body caught fire, causing the ghost to dissipate. Tes looked over to where the fight had been going on and noticed that the ghost had pushed one of the shelves down on to James. Tes was surprised, and went to pick up the shelf.
"This ghost really gave you a run for your money, didn't it?" Tes said
"I'd say." James replied weakly.
As Tes lifted the shelf, he went pale. The shelf had pushed James into a piece of broken wood, and it had impaled him. There was a huge pool of blood under him.
"What's the matter, You look like you just saw a ghost." James joked, as he coughed up blood.
"Oh god, no. Please..." Tes said, choking back tears.
James was getting paler every second. He was losing blood quickly, and Tes knew there was no way he was going to make it. Tes went and put pressure on the wound where he could. James cried out in pain.
"Stop! You'll just get your hands all bloody. I'm done for."
"No. I won't let you die!" Tes exclaimed
" Tes. I need you to promise me you'll keep hunting ghosts even without me."
"No! You are going to make it!" Tes was covered in blood as he kept trying to find a way to help.
"Promise me."
"I-I Promise."
James slowly moved his hand in front of himself so that Tes could see the bracelet he was wearing. It was covered in blood, but it was a nice leather bracelet.
"Take this. It would be a shame for it to go to waste on a corpse."
"Yeah. ok." Tes took the bracelet and put it in his pocket.
"You had better not change our name from ghost team."
"I won't." Tes smiled while still holding back tears.
"Bye. Make some new friends" James said as his body went limp.
Tes checked for a pulse but he couldn't find any. He got up and started walking towards the stairs. He was covered in blood as he walked up the stairs. Each step broke the silence with a piercing creak. Tes left a trail of James' blood as he walked through the doorway that James had kicked open. He stood in the living room, and looked around. Now that he was alone, Tes began to cry.
