It was a sunny morning as the peaceful surroundings was interrupted by the sounds of sneakers running on the hard pavement. There she was Malory Turner in a blue sundress holding her straw hat as her blonde hair swayed violently behind her. She ran towards the big white building with many windows and two big glass doors. As she ran into the building people came to greet her with warm smiles and she returned their greetings with an even warmer smile. As she panted her last breath she stood up straight and dusted herself off preparing to enter the room before her. She opened the door as she ran in and pounced on the bed.
"Grandpa!" She squeal.
She excitingly hugged the man, only to reveal that this person was not her grandfather but a 14 year old boy with messy brown hair and green gold eyes.
"Uh hello my sweet granddaughter!"  He said cheekily.
Malory squeals and covers his whole face with the white blanket. After that she scurries out of the room embarrassed. The boy chuckles to himself as he looks at the direction she took.
Finally finding her grandpa's actual room Malory complains to him.
"Grandpa how come there's a 14 year old boy in your old hospital room?"
The old man replies " oh that boy? He's evil stay away from him!"
"Why?" She asked.
"He told the nurses that I was drinking whisky while we were switching rooms" the aged man said childishly.
"Isn't that your fault?" The young girl laughs as her grandfather continues to complain.
"But why is he in the hospital?"
Her grandfather becomes serious " I heard he has a weak lung and often collapse."
The young girl immediately feels sympathy and pity for the boy.
"Hey gramps do you think I should visit him tomorrow?" She asks as she tugs on his sleeves like a five year old.
"It's up to you" he said smiling.
She stands up and smiles "okay, bye gramps see you tomorrow!"
She quickly kisses his cheek and runs out.
"Such a sweet girl" the old man says to himself.
~tomorrow morning Mak's pov~
The girl from yesterday bursted into my room with a bright smile. She was glowing, her white sundress with butterfly prints suited her so well. Every inch of her screamed perfection She was holding two plastic bags filled with things she brought.
"Hello?" I greeted her questionably.
She smiles even bigger "sorry about yesterday, my names Malory Turner" she says as she moves closer to me.
"The names Mak, Mak Sunflower."
~3rd person pov~
"Mak Sunflower? That's a weird name!"  Malory giggles.
"There's an irony behind it too" he said with a small smile.
"What?" She said with a curious smile.
"I've never seen a sunflower"
"What? Really?"
"Yep" he said. "By the way what's in the bags?"
"Oh"
She grabs the items out of the bags.
"I brought homemade sandwiches, cookies, and some juice boxes. Since I don't know what type of drink you liked. Also I brought you this!" She exclaimed.
Malory pulled out a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear. She smiles cheekily and hands him the gift.
"His names Mr. Plushie" she whispered in his ear as she handed it to him.
He laughed "you act like a child."
"I do not!" Malory argued.
"Whatever you say" he joked.
Malory smiled.
"I like it when you laugh" she said.
He blushed "what the heck."
"Sorry I didn't mean to say that out loud" she quickly covers her delicate mouth. Mak laughs and shakes his head.
"Your so weird" he smiles at her.
She smiles back "I get that a lot."
All of a sudden the warm atmosphere was cut off by cell phone.
"Hello?" Malory picks up her phone. Her hands delicately grasping the phone.
"Yes mom I'll be right there."
She hangs up, the boy sits up in his bed.
"You have to go? He said disappointingly.
She slowly nods.
"Will you be back tomorrow?" Eagerness laced his voice.
Her eyes go wide and she smiles brightly "Of course!"
She hugs him without thinking and runs out of the room.
She screams " see you!" As her footsteps echo across the hall. The boy laughs, never has he met such a weird and lively girl.
The months continue as Malory Turner and Mak Sunflower continue to visit each other. They become closer and closer as the days go by. Then the day Malory has to leave she brings Mak a gift, a good bye gift.
The young girl was hugging the boy as their faces were streaked in tears. They hugged each other in silence for five minutes when Mak's voice ringed throughout the room.
"Do you have to go Mal?" He said as he stroked her hair.
"I wish I didn't have to" she sobbed into his already soaked shoulder.
Mak pushed himself away and broke the hug. He grab the girls shoulder with one hand and the other hand wiping off her tears.
"Will you come back?" He asked.
"I'm not sure" she sobbed even harder and clasped the hand on her cheek.
The two 14 year olds sat on the bed with tear streamed face and showing all their affection for each other. Mak suddenly leans in closer to her face and places another hand on her other cheek. Malory looks up at him her heart beating fast. They both lean in and share their first kiss, the emotions that they kept in for the whole summer bursted out and was freed by a single kiss. The kiss was warm welcoming, and not knowing what to do next the teens part and stare at each other as they leaned in for a second kiss. Trying to make up for the days or years they'll be apart they kiss again and again. Capturing all the warmth and love from each other, until it was time to part.
Staring through the back window of the car, Malory waved good bye to the big white hospital building.
While Mak sat on his hospital bed, chin on his knee looking out the window. Both of the teens hoping that they will once see each other again.
~6 years later~
The ancient and silent atmosphere was intruded after many years by the sounds of clacking high heels. The young girl now a woman was stumbling as she ran, her blonde hair waving about and her white dress trailing behind her. She stopped and looked around bewildered at the sight before her. All around there were sunflowers, big and golden. She stopped to touch it and smiled as she remember her beloved Mak. Then a voice suddenly surprised her.
"Mak planted those"
She turned around and smiled.
"Where's Mak now?" She asked excitingly.
The man shook his head silently and sorrowfully. Malory's once warm and and welcoming smile turned into a frown as she covered her mouth. She let out a silent sob as she cried and fell to the ground. The man awkwardly stroked her back trying to comfort her but failing miserably. He helped her up and invited her into the hospital. The nurses immediately recognized her and rushed toward her side apologizing for her loss. One of the nurses brought her to the office and set her down on a leather couch. She sat down and handed Malory a cup of tea as she stroked her back.
"T-thank you" Malory managed to mumble out.
"He really loved you" the nurse said with a sad smile.
Malory friend her best to smile and her lips quivered " I did to."
"He wanted me to give this to you" the nurse handed her a white envelope.
Malory eagerly opened the envelope and read the letter.
"Dear Mal,
By the time you receive this letter I am probably dead. I wish I could've seen your face before the day I died, but getting to know you was good enough for me. Did you see the sunflowers I planted? Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to see them when I die, but I hope you do. I planted each one of these with you in my mind. I don't want to die Mal I have so much more potential than this. Don't be so sad, I know you're probably crying right now. But move on and get yourself a man you animal! Also Mal do me a favor cheer up.
Love Mak Sunflower"
He had signed his letter fancily but his lettered showed that he struggled to keep his sorrowful emotions in. Malory's tears came out non-stop but she was smiling.
"For you Mak I will cheer up, for you the Sunflower that pasted."
