There was a crackling light, then the clank of pans, and a boy went shooting out of the cupboard. He picked himself off the floor, muttering under his breath about not watching where he was going.
Tamara just stood there, mouth open slightly.
She thought of all the things she should be doing right now.
Screaming?
Hysterics?
Wondering how the hell he just appeared out of nowhere?
She did none of those things, just stepped backwards and closed the kitchen door, then stood and waited for a thought to come.
Nothing did.
Aidan came rushing round the corner, dark fringe hanging over his blue eyes,
"Hey babes, you alright? I heard a clatter"
She wondered how to word it
"Err yes... but...well there's this guy who just fell out of the cupboard in your kitchen."
"That'll probably just be my flatmate," he gave a slightly nervous laugh, "he's always jumping out of strange places. I'll...err...just go have a word with him," and smiled
"He's blue," she stated.
"Is he?" Aidan opened the kitchen door a crack and looked in.
The boy from the cupboard was sitting on the workbench, eating what appeared to be a purple taco filled with multi-coloured tentacles.
He was indeed blue.
Aidan turned back to Tamara.
"So he is!" he replied, "Do you think I should tell him?"
Tamara thought for a second, brain trying to make sense of the situation.
"I don't know... is he usually blue?" she answered tentatively.
"Sometimes, but not when other people are about." He turned to call out to the boy.
"Hey Kyle," the boy looked up from his taco, "you're kinda blue, mate. It's weirding out my girlfriend."
The boy, Kyle, looked down, and poked curiously at his sapphire skin.
"So I am!" he exclaimed, sounding half surprised "I'll be back in a mo!" He put his taco down, before proceeding to dissolve into shadows that evaporated in the afternoon sunlight.
"Sorry about Kyle." Aidan offered a slight smile. "He always forgets when I have people round."
Tamara's eyes never left the place where the other boy had disappeared.
"You know, you are taking this very well. Most people would be running round screaming about demons by now."
"Are you..." Tamara started, before words failed her once more.
"Demons? No. Well... Kyle is...almost one. That's why he can dimension jump and has an unhealthy addiction to tacos, but I am human."
"Great...I...Err" she trailed off as light spat and crackled as Kyle, looking perfectly human, reappeared, phasing in from another dimension.
"Hi, you must be Tamara. Nice to meet you." The boy gave her a charming smile, as if it was the most normal thing in the world. "I'm Kyle, Aidan's dimension-jumping-taco-eating demonic flatmate. " He paused for a minute to take a bite out of the aforementioned taco.
"Err...Hi?" she muttered.
"You know, you are taking the whole popping up out of thin air and being blue thing very well."
"That's what I said!" Aidan chimed in
"...most people would be in hysterics if they saw a demon materialise in their not-quite-human boyfriend's kitchen..."
"Hey what did you tell her that for?" Aidan exclaimed angrily.
"Well I kinda figured that she would work it out sooner or later, anyway it's not like she is going to remember or anything."
Tamara turned to stare at her boyfriend.
"You...you aren't human?"
"I am almost...anyway it doesn't matter...none of it really matters..."
She stared into his eyes. Such a lovely stormy blue, shot through with purple streaks.
"...That migraine you had earlier... it must have got worse...that's all..."
She felt the pain of the headache blossom across her brow, but she didn't mind, as long as she could see his eyes, his beautiful, beautiful eyes.
"...none of this really happened... you passed out because of a headache, that's all..."
His melodic voice trickled through the air, and Aidan watched as his girlfriend blinked slowly before keeling over backwards.
"Almost human eh?" Kyle remarked, "Show me a human who can do that to their girlfriend"
Aidan turned to punch his flatmate, but he was already gone, shadows dissipating round the crumbs of a half-eaten taco.
