"Mia? Mia are you okay?" Sounds started to surround Mia's eardrums and fill her brain. Mia slowly opened her eyes and sat up on the doctor's table she was previously asleep on. Mia looked around the room. Health posters, wooden cabinets, a woman with a bun and a stethoscope around her neck- she was in the school's clinic.
The nurse rushed up to her patient and said, "Mia! You finally woke up. How are you feeling?" The nurse grabbed a miniature notebook from her jacket pocket and took the pencil from behind her ear- as if she were ready to write an essay of emotions coming from Mia. Mia blinked a few times and let out a big yawn, stretching her arms in all directions. "I don't know, I feel normal. What happened?"
"You don't remember what happened-" the nurse checked her watch and continued, "three hours ago?" Mia's eyes shot open. "I was asleep for three hours? I'm sorry, I don't remember-" And then Mia suddenly had a flashback of what happened that day. She pictured herself walking to science class and feeling panicky and dizzy. She told the nurse the whole story- from the feelings she had to herself falling to the floor.
"Everything around me was overwhelmingly dizzy, I couldn't breathe. I couldn't stand. I couldn't-"
"Alright, that's enough. I'll write you a note and you can go home to rest, I'll call your parents." The nurse walked to the opposite of the room and started to write on a peach half-sheet of paper. Mia carefully stood up and smoothed out her skinny jeans. "By the way, Mia," the nurse stated, startling Mia. "What happened to you was a thing called an anxiety attack. Do you have anxiety?" Mia nodded, though she had no idea what anxiety was. The nurse gave her the slip of paper, and guided her out of the clinic and into the hallway.
"Go and rest, Mia. Get well," the nurse said and walked back into her clinic. Mia stumbled as she walked, obviously still worn out by the events of that day. You're almost there Mia. Stay steady. Stay steady. Mia tried her hardest to stay standing and used up all her strength to keep her legs from giving out. Mia reached for the door handle to the main office, opened it, and walked inside. As the klutz she was, she immediately tumbled forward and stepped on someone's foot, and they released an ow! into the air. Mia fell on the stranger with the hurt foot and they both landed on top of each other on the ground.Mia's bum ended up on the back of the stranger, who was groaning with pain. "Oh my goodness!" Mia announced and stood up, off of the other person. "I'm so sorry, let me help you up." Mia bent down and reached for the stranger, but they didn't accept Mia's help. They simply sat up and removed the hair (the dirty blonde hair) from their face, which revealed the face of a girl. She had hazel green eyes and light freckles that speckled her cheeks. Mia's eyes were glued to this unfamiliar girl, the one with the pained look on her face. Mia shook her head, letting her out of the trance.
"Er- are you okay? Do you need a hand?" Mia awkwardly asked. The stranger looked away and blew a strand of curly hair from her face. "Sure, thanks." Her voice was shy and pretty, just like the rest of her. She slowly lifted her hand to grab Mia's. As soon as their hands were joined, the dirty blonde girl yanked as hard as she could to bring Mia down to the ground, making her bum hit the floor. Mia's eyebrows shot up.
"Haha! You totally fell for that," the stranger threw her head up and let out a laugh, which Mia found extremely cute.
"OMG! You bully!" Mia exaggerated and started to laugh too. All the people in the office glanced at the two girls on the ground. They both looked at one another and helped each other up.
"So, what's your name?" Mia thrusted out her hand, expecting a shake. The stranger's legs start to shift, and she bit her bottom lip. "I'm.. I'm," her voice dropped down about five notches, and her eyes fell to the floor. "Lindsey,"
"W-What was that? Leah?"
"L-Lindsey,"
Mia smiled an awkward smile. "A little louder please?" Lindsey coughed and said in her loudest voice, "LINDSEY!" Mia jumped out of her skin. "Woah! You're one interesting person," Mia laughed. "I'm Mia, nice to meet you." Their hands shook.
"Hey, I'm so sorry about what.. happened," Mia scratched her head in embarrassment. "It's alright mate, it was quite the experience," Lindsey winked at Mia, and for a second, her eyes turned blood red, and suddenly went back to its normal shade of green. A wave of confusion overtook Mia, and she rubbed her eyes. "Am I hallucinating?" Mia thought.
"Lindsey, did your eyes just change-"
"What! Oh, I have to go. My mom is expecting me. Bye Mia," Lindsey said and ran out of the school, disappearing around the corner.
Mia stood in the office surrounded by people, but it surprisingly felt like she was all alone. Her mind wondered about that girl, and her mysterious eyes. She had to see her again. She wanted to get to know this interesting girl.
