(Blaine)

I scan the display case behind the counter after hours at work for something sweet to take home for dessert. Darcy won't mind if I take one or maybe two. I mean they are just going to be thrown away and I don't want them to go to waste. Sweet and decadent assortment of pastries I have a problem with walking away from. I love the perks of working here I can't remember why I doubted this job when I first walked inside and got hired on the spot.

Good thing too because otherwise, I would have been living on the streets if I didn't get hired three months ago and have Darcy let me rent a bedroom out of the house she lives in. An old Victorian-style home, ancient and old by appearance but beautiful on the inside. A grand staircase once you open the front door. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms. I only have to pay five hundred and fifty to rent the room and a ride every morning to work. Well, there are the negatives in the living situation like I can never call in sick when Darcy would know I'm lying. And it's just awkward in a sense living under the same roof as your boss.

Don't get me wrong though Darcy is great. Older than me when I just turned eighteen and she's about I don't know early thirties I am guessing. I never asked because I thought it would be rude. She hardly looks aged at all with no signs of wrinkles showing on her face. She reminds me of peter pan never wanting to grow up. She dyes her hair a new color each week, wearing ridiculous clothes but no one in the small town seems to care. They actually seem to love the craziness she has going on to add some sort of excitement to Willow Brook.

Willow Brook is a small dainty town picturesque to those to drive through as the perfect town to live, being so peaceful and friendly but believe me it's quite boring. We have nothing here being a population of five thousand. Yeah, we have a few stores, a gas station, library, post office, and a square downtown filled with a few local restaurants and stores but nothing worthwhile. It seems like the town is always busy when in reality it's just because of the cars passing through to somewhere better. People do move here because it isn't like the big cities where there are robberies and murders. Nope. This town has absolutely nothing to worry about and is not much fun to keep you entertained.

I still can't grasp why I picked to stay and live here. Here isn't what I originally wanted or where I had thought I'd end up working behind the counter of a coffee shop miles away from home. I wanted a job yeah, a new start, my own place, and far away from everyone I knew. I want to break free and be me whoever me is for a couple of years. I didn't want to go straight off to college completely clueless about what I want to do with my life. Maybe I don't want to go to college and that's my decision. I could have stayed where I grew up around the same people but why do that? I wanted something different, different surroundings even if it means living somewhere boring like here. I mean it isn't totally boring it has its fun times and most of the people are nice. But nothing really happens except small-town gossip I don't give in to listening.

I open the display case my mind decided on a pumpkin scorn and maybe something warm to drink I can take with me. I already decided to walk the fifteen minutes back home than bum a road. I'll need the walk after this. Plus Darcy has another date with some guy she hasn't been able to stop talking about for weeks. "Couldn't help yourself could you?" I hear Darcy ask from behind me.

"Hey, the scorn told me it wanted to come home with me tonight. I can't be mean and deny it, love."

"Sure." she laughs.

"What do you have?" I notice the box in her hands I assume is filled with pastries of some sort.

"Oh, just a few things I made for a special delivery. "

"I forgot it's Friday again. " I reply, every Friday some customer orders never able to make it to the shop. Since I started working here he's the only customer I know Darcy makes home deliveries for. Heck, maybe it's more than one-day deliveries each week. How would I know? I don't see why she bothers and goes through the hassle of one customer?
