Him
I had always loved her; since the first time I saw her two years ago.
It was the 28th of December. We were all at the MUN conference at Columbia University. She was standing with a group of girls, a folder hugged to her chest. In that moment, everything around me became irrelevant. All that mattered was the way her hand flew to her mouth when she laughed; the way she tucked her hair behind her ear when it came lose; the way her eyes shined. She was all that mattered - but I was too late.
It was just that night when it happened. It was time for the global village; for each delegation to represent their country. My delegation was made up of seven students from many different high schools in the states, and we were representing U.S.A., naturally. I was a junior at Regis High School, an all-boys school in New York City. Two other delegates were from my school, and the three of us were standing in a group discussing our first day of debates. Eventually the topic of conversation turned to the girls we had found hot. Vance, one of my closest friends, pointed out the girls - yes, plural - if they were in our vicinity, while the other guy, Arnold, could not find her so he was busy talking about her; meanwhile I was half-focused on watching her talk to some people while she stood behind a Norwegian stall. She was from Norway.
"Who is it, Cas?" Vance teased me in a sing-song voice.
"This chick I saw this morning-" I started, when the other boy, Arnold, cut me off, pointing at a girl in the distance.
"That's the girl I'm going after."
I looked up and put on a smile. He was pointing at my girl.
"You were saying?" They all turned to me after smacking him on the back and congratulating him.
I pointed at the girl standing beside her, "Her."
"Good going, Caspar! She's smokin' hot," Vance bro-fisted me as everyone else hooted.
Eventually we all moved to the dance floor, and I temporarily forgot about her - I had only known her for a few hours after all.
That, my friends, is the story of how I lost my first chance.
