It had been well over a month, my artwork started selling, I was making more money than my family has ever known to be possible, my one goal was to bring it home so my father and brother would be home. The mines were unsafe, you would hear of gas poisoning all the time, of the poorly constructed mines concaving into itself.
I had started dating Gabriel, he was amazing, but something was off about him. He was always so distant. We had kissed, which was honestly my first, but it didn't seem right, he pulled away quickly and made an excuse to leave, but lighter news, I was headed home, we had promised to write every day until our love could be rejoined and the flames of our passion could once again ignite our souls in flesh consuming, heart breaking bliss.
I grabbed my luggage and got onto the boat waving goodbye to my darling Gabriel. He soon turned into a blur upon the horizon, but he remained a crystal clear image within my mind and my feelings remaining clear in my heart.
It seemed those six weeks passed by so rapidly, it was over far too soon.
The whole journey home I painted, the painting on the top was of the Rio De Janeiro festival and on the bottom was the cruelty I had witnessed.
You know I envy children, they spend their time chasing butterflies and playing with the beams of sun that seep through the leaves, their greatest fear being the nonexistent monsters under the bed, instead of worrying about the monsters in the people around them and the ones living inside their heads.
By the time I had finished the painting we were already docking. I grabbed my things and said farewell to all the amazing friends I had made on the boat, before walking off, when my feet touched the ground, I felt no sparks as I did in brazil, I seen no musicians and heard no cheers, but the one thing Massalia gave me that no other place on earth could, was the feeling of being home.
After a week home, dad and Joseph my brother had quit, we were now in an amazingly lavish house, my mother wore pearls around her neck as she had always wanted to feel like she was all dressed up and headed to the opera, and tonight she gets to go. As for me I was headed to the market to get food.
The rain outside fell hard, as if it was weeping for me. I threw on a shawl and I left the house waving goodbye to my family, but I had no clue it would be the first of many times I'd have to say goodbye.
I walked through the pouring rain, it was beautiful, the white and black clouds mixed together perfectly. I walked through the alley way which was about one third of a mile from my house to see Gabriel from the corner of my eye.
I spun around as fast as I could but there was nobody there, I shook it off and continued to the market.
I had come and gone to the market surprisingly quick, when I returned, my stomach stirred and quaked. I dropped the food and ran to the door. I swung it open and something fell as if only the door had held it open, I screamed brushing it off of me and when I looked down I seen it was only my dad playing a joke.
I laughed hard. "Father you frightened me, common get up and take that rope from your neck before mother sees you." I said, but he laid motionless.
I turned him over to see his eyes ripped from their sockets and his neck deep black and purple bruising. "OH MY GOD!" I screamed.
I grabbed my dagger from my tights I had kept it on the inside of my thigh, never removing it, until today. I swept through the house, my back to the wall all the time, except when bursting into all the rooms as fast as I could, because maybe if I startle them I'll have the upper hand.
I darted into my baby sisters room, it looked clear, I was about to leave the room when I heard a thud in her closet. I held the knife close to my side as I walked further closer and closer.
I swung open the door my knife in the air, when all the sudden two little arms wrapped around my knees. With a deep breathe I looked down, it was my sister Evangeline (E-Van-Gel-Lean). I fell to my knees and embraced her, taking in her love, her fear, and even her scent.
I pulled back and brushed her long hair from her face. "Ok, where are the others Eve?" I questioned.
She batted her long, tear soaked eyelashes at me. "They are in the attic, I fell along the way, so I ran in here." She whispered.
I nodded. "I need you to be a big, girl. I need you to be fearless alright?" I asked quietly.
"Ok sissy." She whimpered.
I picked her up, placing her on my left side, I then took the knife in my right hand. I walked out of the room when I heard pounding in the attic, I ran to the attic door and seen a masked man, he wore a potato sack over his head. I darted around the corner out of site and put down Eve and handed her the smaller flip open knife which I kept inside my corset. What can I say? I like to prepare for everything.
She shook her head no. "Take it quick, if anyone comes that's not our family, kill them, you have to be the big girl you promised to be." I said pushing it into her small, fragile hands.
I walked around the corner and came face to face with my father's murderer, the man who was trying to kill my remaining family.
They looked at me "are you ready?" they questioned. With tears within my eyes I said, "as ready as I will ever be."
The killer raised their fists, but I focus more on planting my feet and grounding myself. With speed I had never seen he rushed at me. When she was closed enough I moved my shoulder back, and pushed him by his back, something later to be named a side swipe. He hit wall, it seemed he's contemplating, but then he spun around and laughed. "is that your best?" he yelled, his voice boomed and echoed, giving me chills.
I stayed silent and replanted my feet, he rushed me again throwing invisibly fast punches, I ducked and weaved, blocking as fast as possible, but in the blink of an eye he landed a jump punch straight into my face and with that I flew to the ground I tried to get up but my arms felt weak and the room spun violently, I couldn't get up.
He hovered over me, his eyes showed all the people he had harmed, it was almost like a death count within his eyes. "I'm not going to kill you, I want you to train hard until you are at your best. On that day, the day you feel you can take even Satan himself, I will be there, and I will kill you." He said before vanishing into the darkness.
I crawled to Eve who sat stunned. I pulled her into my arms and held her tight. I let go and went to the attic door. I pounded, but no answer. I kicked the door open. "MOM?!?!" I screamed.
I ran through the attic searching high and low, before hearing a thud behind me, I ran over and seen a man dart out the door. I ran to the spot from which he ran to see my mom. I removed my shawl and placed it on the strange wounds on her neck.
"You'll be ok. It'll all be ok mom." I said, crying to the point of blindness.
She put her hand to my face and caressed it. "My biggest regret in this life, is the things I have not done, I have not seen, and I was too scared to do. Although my greatest joy in life, was being a mother and wife, I cannot help but wonder what could've been. So now I give you my greatest advice as your mother, follow your dreams as I didn't follow mine and follow your heart as it led me to your father, I believe in you and trust you will always take your mind with you. Goodbye my baby, I lov-." But before she could finish, her last breath was took.
My life crumbled within my hands that day, my heart died with my mother, and my humanity was crushed by my pain
