Age: 4

The air was cold, tiny wisps of rain were falling from the sky. From the warm comfort of your home, you watched as they fell slowly from a window. It amazed you how water could come from the big puffy things in the sky. You heard your mother say they had a name, but you couldn't remember.

You poked at a drop that had landed on the glass, and led your small finger downward as it left a trail. Giggling, you did the same with another drop. Your mother watched, smiling gently from your bedroom door. She enjoyed seeing you happy, you were her baby that she loved so much. She loved you with every fiber of her being. Of course though, you wouldn't understand how much joy you brought her, as you were merely a child.

She walked in and kneeled beside you, also watching the pelts of water come down. Wrapping an arm around your small frame, she smiled and asked,"The rain is beautiful isn't it?" You giggled and replied happily,"Yes."

Your mother giggled as well, and gave you a small squeeze making you squeal. "It's time for bed," she said pulling the curtains of the window shut. You groaned, but didn't protest further. Flopping on your bed you, snuggled into the covers and adjusted the pillows. Your mother helped you get comfortable, and sat on the edge of your bed. Her warm eyes gazed at you, and you refrained from laughing out of embarrassment and happiness.

"Did you enjoy yourself today?"She asked curiously, and you quickly nodded. "Yes, I had fun today!" She smiled and kissed the side of your cheek. You giggled in response and her heart swelled with happiness when she heard that melodious sound. No love can be compared to the one that she had for you her only child.

"Want me to tell you a story?" You quickly nodded practically jumping in your bed out of excitement,"Yes please!" She chuckled at your eagerness and set herself in a comfortable spot.

Humming she placed a strand of hair behind your ear, as you waited patiently for her to begin. "Well this story is of a legendary hero of a village hidden away among the leaves," your eyes blinked slowly as you tried to picture the scenery in your mind.
Trees sprouting from every which way, big and tall and all sorts of vegetation covering mountains and hills. At the center sat a beautiful village, with gates as big as buildings like the ones in the city. "This hero as a child received harsh treatment from the villagers. They would say terrible things, calling him a monster a demon of sorts. Older children would pick on him and people would avoid him," a frown slowly set on your face.

This wasn't the story you were hoping to hear. What happened to the cool knife-flinging people? If the main character was a hero, shouldn't he be loved by the villagers and not bullied? You weren't enjoying this story very much. It was too sad for your taste.

"I don't like this story, Momma." She tilted her head in confusion and you proceeded to explain to her your thoughts.

She gave a hum after hearing your explanation, gazing at you lovingly. "Well honey, sometimes the heroes aren't seen as cool and brave in the beginning. At times, people need to see for themselves that there is a hero among them. They might not know the struggles they went through or the fights they battled, but when a person believes they have the qualities of someone great they become a hero in their eyes."

You stared at her for a few moments before nodding, "You're very smart, Momma! How do you know so much about heroes? Was Grandpa or Grandma one? Oh! What about Daddy, is he a hero?" Her heart skipped a beat at the mention of your father. Of course being a child, you wouldn't understand the complex subject of why your father wasn't with the two of you.
