"I'll see you after school, Finn, K?" Jake asked, facing the 12th grade hallways and me. I nodded. "Y-yeah, got it," I answered, smiling a bit more confident now. He grinned back. "Good luck," he said as he held his hand up, his arm at a 90° angle. I beamed and put my hand up like his. "Thanks."
And with that, we walked past each other, high-fiving along the way.
Shoving my hands into my pocket, I glanced back at Jake, who didn't bother doing the same. A small sigh escaped my lips as I stared back out in front of me. My once confident smile had vanished once I walked through the crowd of 9th graders.
They all seemed to loom over me as I made my way around them all. I clutched onto my backpack straps and increased my pace. "218, 218, 218," I murmured to myself as I searched the whole hallway for my first period class.
After what seemed like forever, I finally found Room 218. It was a pretty big room filled with tables, beakers, bottles, a whiteboard, and even a bulletin board. This place was bigger than my room! "Woah," I whispered, my eyes growing wide and sparkly.
But it wasn't because of the classroom. Standing behind a large desk in the front of the room was a lady with beautiful pink hair. Her matching rose eyes sparkled in the light and the headpiece she wore only made her seem brighter.
That was when she stared at me. "Oh! Hello there! Are you one of my students?" She asked with a warm and happy smile. Her voice was sweet and bubbly, like bubblegum.
I couldn't believe my mouth went dry then and all I could do was sound like a fish out of water. She giggled and walked up in front of me, making my face grow the same color as her dress.
"You must be nervous," she stated, the obvious. "I'm Ms. Bubblegum. I'm going to be your science teacher." Bubblegum? Makes sense. But what I didn't get was why she was babying me. I'm 15!
"I-I'm Finn," I was finally able to stutter. She giggled again, putting a hand over her mouth. Does she really think I'm that funny? Without another thought, I pulled my hat down to my eyes and bit my lower lip.
She immediately stopped laughing, and I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. I let go of my hat and stared into her gentle eyes. She was slightly shorter than me, making it less awkward. I think.. Anyways, I've never been touched by anyone other than Jake and my "parents."
"I'm sorry, Finn," she apologized. I didn't see that coming. "I guess it's just easier for me to laugh at kids like you, especially since it wasn't long since I was your age, I suppose." My age? What did she mean by that? "I'm 20, about 5 years older than you," she announced. 20? 20?!
I spun around and pulled my hat down from the sides, my face exploding into a giant, hot mess. "Oh my glob, oh my glob, oh my glob! She's 20?!" I thought, too embarrassed to look at her.
"Finn? Are you alright?" I heard her ask with concern in her voice. I squeezed my eyes shut to control my blushing. This is going to be a long year.
