It was like any other night. It was cold, since it was winter, but I was secured in a big coat and black skinny jeans. I hated the night, but loved it at the same time. It was dangerous and eerie, but it was also silent and peaceful, it was very misleading.
My shift at the small café I worked at had ended almost twenty minutes ago, and I was trying my hardest not to let the feeling of being watched get to me. My house was just around the corner, and since everyone was still working, I was stuck walking home.
Footsteps echoed from behind me, and my breath hitched. My thoughts immediately started going wild. Could someone possibly be following me? Would this person attack me? Were they going to kill me?
I quickened my pace and let out a breath of relief when the footsteps all but disappeared. I passed the empty park as quickly as possible, ignoring the squeak of the barely rocking swing set beside me as I entered the last alleyway before my house.
“Adeline Delray.”
The sound of my name echoing off the walls of the empty alleyway had me spinning around in fright. I clutched my hand to my chest, my breaths sharp and brutal.
“Ryan, don’t scare me like that!” Ryan Emerson; the captain of the football team, the golden boy of Eastwick High School, the boy that everyone loved. A smile lit up his face.
“Sorry,” He took a step forward and I smiled back, turning fully toward him. What in the world was he doing out at this time of night? “You shouldn’t be wondering around this place at this time of night.” Ryan spoke up, his loud voice emitted through the silence and I jumped. His words implied it to be a simple comment, though his tone suggested a warning.
“I didn’t have a ride home…so…” I said, starting to continue my descent home.
“Adeline.” He said lowly from behind me, and before I could even think about it, he gripped my arm and used it to shove me up against the wall. My breath quickened once more and my heart banged against my chest in an unnatural rhythm. Ryan’s hand loosened on my arm, sliding up to my shoulder and tracing the outline of my collarbone. My eyes widened as I watched his fingers slide up my neck, before cupping my face.
“Oh, Adeline.” He whispered as he lowered his face into the crook of my neck. I was frozen, completely and utterly still as he tenderly puckered his lips against my skin. “You always were the prettiest at school,” he began, trailing his lips to my left cheek. “Always the smartest,” he moved to my nose. “Always the most sexiest.”
He trailed his hands down to my hips lightly, giving them a gentle squeeze. My lips trembled as they opened. “R-Ryan, what a-are you doing?” I stuttered, feeling as though if I so much as breathe wrong he’ll hurt me. But what was he doing? He pulled back slightly and looked up at me through his light green eyes, his dark brown hair fell floppily over one eye, and I caught a glimpse of the boy I had known since sixth grade. Though we were in completely different leagues and social groups, we were once friends, but when he joined the football team, our friendship went down the drain and he acted as though I never existed.
