Heather stared out the window of her neighbor's slowly moving car. They were driving through the neighborhood, their eyes searching desperately for any sign of little Avery, but to no avail. After one more quick drive around the block, they finally pulled up into Heather's driveway. Her front lawn was littered with police cars and two black SUVs. According to one of the officers, she'd just missed one of the search parties going to search for her daughter, and when she offered to go with them she was immediately turned down.
"Why not? I need to be out there looking for my baby!" She shot back at one of the women from before.
"We need you to stay here just in case the person who took her calls for you or sends you any messages."
Reluctantly, Heather nodded and was lead into her house, then to her couch where she sat down with her face hidden in her hands.
"We have a few more questions if you don't mind. Anything you can tell us could be very helpful in finding your daughter. Can you tell us where you last saw Avery?"
Heather lifted her head up to stare at the woman speaking with her now. Earlier she'd been referred to as agent Rourke. She had black hair and was wearing a tight dress, but even with the dress covering most of her body, Heather was able to make out the slightest bulge in her stomach. She was pregnant; silently Heather prayed the woman would never have to suffer what she was going through now. The lady was accompanied by another blonde woman, agent Gonzales, dressed similarly but with a less sympathetic look on her face. Finally, Heather answered her question.
"I already told you. The last place I saw her was in her bed, fast asleep. She wanted me to read to her but I told her I was too tired..." Regret overwhelmed her but she tried to remain calm as she held back more tears and struggled with each shaky breath. She didn't want to go another second without her little angel, yet she knew the search for her was far from over.
"It's not your fault this happened, M'am." Gonzales assured her, resting a comforting hand on her knee. Heather nodded.
"We need to know what she was doing before that. Did the two of you go anywhere? Did anyone come to the house, maybe to check up on you guys?" Rourke asked carefully, her eyes gentle.
Heather nodded again. "Her father came over to see her, only for a few seconds. He works in construction with long hours. First time in months. That's his excuse for never coming to see her. But she loves her daddy." She assured them, wondering distantly at the possibility of her ex-boyfriend abducting his own child. It seemed impossible, if anything it seemed like he could care less about being a good father to her.
"Have the two of you gotten into any sort of fight recently?"
"No."
"Do you think it could be him that took your daughter?"
"No. No I don't."
"Did anything else suspicious happen that day?"
"No."
"Do you know anyone else who could have done this to your daughter?"
"No... Why? Do you think I could know the person who took her?"
"It's possible. Whoever it was would have been watching your daughter for quite some time, maybe even tried to assert themselves into her life. Does that sound like anyone you know?"
Before Heather could answer the question, the phone rang. Both of the women went silent. She glanced at each of them before they finally urged her to pick it up. Taking in one deep breath, Heather picked the phone up, cradling it to her ear. The agents set the phones up so that they could hear the conversation as well, and stared at her intently as she began to speak.
"H-hello?"
"Tell them to leave. Tell them she's safe with me. She doesn't belong to you. I will take much better care of her. Leave us alone or you'll pay."
"Can you at least come back to get her teddy? She's probably missing it right now." It was hard not to scream at the man on the other line, but the agents had instructed her to remain calm and try and lure him back to the scene of the crime.
"Oh, you mean Biscuit? That won't be a problem. Nice try, though. You can't have her. She's mine. Don't trust them. They weren't able to take the others away from me, either." With that final sentence, the man hung up. He was in her hospital room and no one had noticed? Before she could address that, however, she realized something; the man had said 'other's. Did that mean Avery wasn't the only one?
"Others?" Heather slowly put the phone down, turning to the women with a confused look on her face. They looked at her sadly.
"We think the man who took Avery might have taken some other girls her age away as well. We were investigating where you last saw Avery, in her room, and we now have even more of a reason to believe it's the same man and that you know him." Rourke explained. Heather gave another confused and hurt look.
"Come with us. We're about to give a profile. After that we're going to ask you to appeal to the media." Gonzales said, motioning for Heather to follow the two of them outside where a large group of people were standing, all waiting on the investigators to give a profile on the man they were looking for.
Rourke began -
"We think the man we're looking for is most likely responsible for the disappearance of several other young girls, each of their abductions dating back to about two years ago. We believe this man to be older, maybe in his forties or even fifties. Something in the passed two years could have set him off, something that most likely lead him to believe what he is doing is a good thing. So far, we have five different victims that we've gathered over the last two years, Avery making six. Each of these girls have blonde hair and blue eyes and belong to single mothers with some history of mental illness.
It is highly unlikely this man has hurt any of these girls and is probably taking what he believes is good care of them. Gracie Philips is one of them. Her body was uncovered three months ago; she died of an ammonia, so we have no reason to believe her death was intentional. To show how much he cares for them, he takes the time after the abduction to make these girls beds and make sure they remain asleep throughout the entire process. When it comes to these girl's parents, however, he can and will turn lethal. Each of these girl's parents were murdered a day after their abduction. We believe he may know Miss Hayden because he hasn't made any moves intending on killing her. Either that or kill her would be too risky. Whoever he is, we believe he has low self-esteem and is shy around people his age, but tends to get along better with children. Kids may find the way he looks to be either funny, or scary. He has access to hospitals, which leads us to believe he may be a visitor, volunteer or even a worker as he was been able to sneak into the room where Miss Hayden was being attended to without any one finding his presence there suspicious. That's it for now. We should be searching all day. Remember to be thorough in your searches and if you think you've seen either the suspect or any of the victims, do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you."
