"I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns, slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams."
Adam had cleverly left his most famous songs until last so that the ones who only liked him for Fireflies and Good Time got a pretty good idea of just how magnificent this man was. At this point I had my arms around Clara and Tami, with their arms around me and a complete stranger. The whole row was exactly like this (albeit most of them a little bit drunk), unified by music as we swayed together and the more uneasy ones almost falling over.
"Well, that's it for tonight, guys," he said into the mic, provoking the almost inevitable 'Noooo!' from the crowd. He smiled sheepishly and made a sound that wasn't exactly a laugh but wasn't exactly a scoff. In any case, it was adorable. "You know what, if I could I'd just sing to you guys all night, you've been an absolutely marvellous crowd. Goodnight everybody!"
Strangely enough, his departure wasn't met by the 'One! More! Song!' chant I was so accustomed to hearing at concerts like this, but instead it was met by the crowd respectfully chanting his name and seeming to understand the concert was over. It was certainly a welcome change, even although I hated to see him go.
I stared at Clara for a moment, and from Tami's silence I could tell she was doing the same thing as me. She was watching the stage, starstruck, for long after he had departed, and then it finally came out. "Oh...my. God!" she squealed, literally jumping to face me. "That was him! Oh god, he was right there! Oh my god!"
That continued for most of the ride home. I'm not saying we didn't try to calm her down, it was just a lot funnier watching her go off her head. Unfortunately we had to catch the last train at eleven so we couldn't do any of the after stuff. That was okay for me because I knew there was always the next time.
I drove the girls home since Tami was too drunk to drive, and we didn't trust Clara to drive most of the time anyways.
Finally, I reached my house, about a mile from my last drop-off. I took all the merch I had bought (a hoodie, a t-shirt, two different wristbands and an owl necklace- let's just say I had been saving up) in one hand and my bag in the other. In heinsight, it would have been easier to just stuff the merch in my bag, but my sleep deprived, exhausted and monster-drunk mind didn't seem to think that way. The first thing I did when I got in the door was look at myself in the mirror and sigh. My hair was in tatters and I looked redder than anything. I laughed to myself. Just shows it's been a great night, I thought as I removed my hairband and put my owl necklace on.
I took my phone on the way upstairs, and automatically put it to Owl City. Weirdly enough, I hadn't fallen asleep to his music in a while. I didn't know why, because it was probably simply the best kind of music to fall asleep to; floaty and dreamy.
Putting the earbuds in, I curled up into fetal position and let my eyes close after such a gorgeous night.
