The bell rang and everyone went to their next class. Jane and Ruby walked together down the hallway. "So who are you going to ask to be your partner?" asked Ruby. "Actually Drake Neilson is my partner..." Jane replied. "Wait, what!?" asked Ruby. Drake was an older boy who was pretty popular. Jane explained the whole ordeal. "So are you two like a thing now?" asked Ruby. "What? No. Why would you think that" asked Jane. "Because you like him. I can see it in your eyes!" Said Ruby. Jane rolled her eyes and gave a small smile. Then she walked away. "YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE!" Yelled Ruby down the hallway.
After school Jane was bringing Ruby home in Jane's sick Van. Her phone buzzed and Ruby immediately picked it up. "Drake is texting you!?!?" She exclaimed. "Well yeah we kind of have to communicate in order to plan out when we're gonna practice and stuff. What does the text say?" Asked Jane. "It says 'Hey Jane, this is Drake. I'm free tonight if you wanna come over'" Ruby said.
Oh ok" said Jane.
"Well aren't you gonna turn around and go to his house?" Asked Ruby.
"Ah no. Not now" said Jane.
"Well I texted him that you're on your way. So you better get on it." Said Ruby
"Ruby!" yelled Jane
"Well your going to have to go over there sometime!"
"Ugh, I guess you're right. I'll just drop you off and then-"
"Hey as long as you're heading in that direction can you drop me off at Anthony's?"
"Fine but you owe me"
They turned around and went to Anthony's house. "Text me when you want me to pick you up, ok?" Asked Jane. "K! See you later!" She said as she shut the car door. Jane then drove to Drake's house and parked the car. She walked up to the door, took a deep breathe, and then knocked. "Hang on, one second!" Someone inside yelled. A few seconds later Drake opened the door with a big smile "Hi! Thanks for coming over" said Drake. "Yeah, thanks for inviting me" said Jane.
"Well come on in!"
Jane walked inside to his warm house. It smelled really nice, like cinnamon and apple crisp. "Do you want anything to drink?" He asked. "I'm alright but thank you" she said politely. "Alright well let's start working over by the piano" he said and he grabbed his laptop from the table and brought it to the piano. They sat on the bench
"So what kind of song were you thinking?" Asked Drake.
"Um I hadn't really thought about it" she replied.
"Well we could do some sort of love duet, if you'd want to do that" he said. "Nah that's too mainstream" said Jane. Drake smirked a little. "Hipster" he said. "Whatever" she replied and she smiled and rolled her eyes.
"Well we should do a song from some Broadway musical. Mrs. Young is a sucker for a good musical" said Drake. "Rent! We should sing something from Rent!" Said Jane very suddenly.
"Rent it is!" Said Drake.
He got on his computer and searched Rent duets. "Ok so the only songs that aren't all lovey-dovey are 'Take Me or Leave Me', 'Tango Maureen', or 'What You Own'." Said Drake.
"Well, Which one is your favorite?" Asked Jane.
"Take Me or Leave Me baby!" Said Drake.
"Guess I'm leaving!" Said Jane jokingly. They said "I'm gone!" at the same time and started laughing.
"Alright so you wanna be Maureen, I'll be Joanne?" Asked Drake.
"Sounds like a plan" replied Jane.
They sang it through a few times and it sounded pretty good. Then they started just talking and joking around. Drake said something really funny and they both started laughing. Then the laughter died down and they just kind of sat there looking at each other. Jane found the situation very awkward and grabbed her phone and said "Oh looks like I have to go pick up Ruby!" She got up and went to put on her coat that had been hung on the rack. "Oh I see" said Drake.
"Thanks for inviting me over. See you on Thursday!" Yelled Jane as she ran out the door.
"Yep you too" Drake yelled back.
Jane picked up Ruby and brought her home. Then she went home.
