I followed the blood specked hoodie through the crowd, weaving my way through the thick crowd of people. Humans are stupid I knew, narrowly avoiding brushing up against a business man. They never saw me, they only knew I was there when I practically screamed in their ears. Humans are so stupid.
Jeff glanced back at me every few seconds, as if to check I was still behind him. It wasn’t in my nature to follow someone home, especially when they knew I was there and it felt uncomfortable. I could not find it in myself to walk beside Jeff as if he was my friend. He is not my friend.
As I expected, I found myself looking at the people around me, searching for a flicker of fear. I was hungry. I looked back up. Jeff was gone.
I hesitated, wondering whether to search for him or sate my hunger. As always the primal instinct in me won and I turned to follow a pretty young girl. Even I had a preference for girls over men. Wrong I knew, but despite everything, once upon a time I was still human.
The girl was blonde and by the light sway of her hips I knew she was a girl used to attention, her nails were perfectly manicured as if they’d been done often and I assumed she was rich. She turned down into a completely deserted alley and I followed behind, making sure my hood was up. Rich and stupid. Just my type. I laughed at my own joke before I caught up with her.
I moved behind her silently, waiting for the buildings to obscure this street from the crowded square. My goal had almost been achieved when my foot hit a rock with enough force to send it skittering across the path and onto the road where it fell into a drain, the rock hit the ground with a soft thud and I winced.
I looked at her as she looked over her shoulder and she smiled. I didn’t attempt to lift my hood.
‘I’m Taylor.’ She said with a smile, the look in her eyes said she expected me to practically fall to my knees at her feet and beg for her attention. When I didn’t even lift my hood down the look turned irritated. She continued on with her sickly sweet smile. ‘What’s your name?’
I was bored of this. And very, very hungry. I dropped my hood and her scream pierced through my head. I smiled.
She ran up the street, stumbling in her loose sandals but ignoring the twisted ankle using the adrenaline through her system. I was faster than her and I caught her arm, jerking her to a stop.
I said nothing as I pushed her to the ground, pulling the knife from the pocket of my hoodie and pressing it gently to her throat to stop her scream. Like I hoped, her voice cut off in a whimper and she stared up at me beseechingly. I looked into her eyes flatly. This look of innocence had no effect on me. No one was innocent.
I snapped her neck then, quickly and efficiently. I lifted her corpse over my shoulder and dragged her deep into an alley. There I slit her open with a surgeons precision and the white tank top she wore slowly turned a delicious shade of crimson. As always, I started with her kidneys.
‘You’re even more messed up than I am.’ A voice said, laughing. I looked up from the mangled mess of her organs and met the amused eyes of Jeff.
I shrugged in answer, sitting back to chew what was in my mouth.
‘Hungry are we?’
I shrugged again, swallowing and pulling the second kidney from where it was nestled against the back of the stomach. I didn’t always kill when I ate, sometimes I’d just take what I needed and leave, it was a mercy, something that made me feel human again. But despite that I’d always be drawn to them again, I’d always hunger for their blood and suddenly my hands would be stained red by my ‘mercy’. I was too hungry to even try with this girl.
‘Not much of a talker?’ He laughed again, perching on top of a bin and swinging his legs as he watched me rip organs to pieces with my teeth.
‘Why do you eat people? Is it like your kill sign or something?’
I looked at him questioningly.
‘You know, something that proves to all them stupid humans you’re alive and active?’ He laughed and smiled as if he was just discussing the weather. ‘I like to make my corpses smile.’
I shrugged and finished my meal, wiping blood away from my face with the sleeve of my jumper. ‘Hungry.’
‘Ever thought about eating KFC?’ he stuck his tongue out from the side of his cheek where he’d split his face and grinned wider.
I didn’t want to explain my ways so I simply stood and continued to follow him to where he lived. He chattered the entire way, forcing me to walk beside him.
‘I’ve always wanted a roommate. I had one for a bit but then he changed the channel while I was watching TV so I killed him. He was my first kill!’ He kept talking as if he’d never shut up and I contented myself with counting the crimson smears across our jumpers.
‘I like your eye sockets by the way.’ He told me, ‘They’re a pretty colour.’ He laughed manically and I felt the need to punch him in the face. I let it fade, refusing to act upon it.
Finally he lead me through a dark passage in the woods and up the rickety steps of his house, he sat down at the living room window and stared out. ‘We just dropped off the face of the planet.’ He grinned. ‘No one can find us here.’
I nodded and let Jeff lead me to my new room.
