I sat on the ground, slouched against the locked door of my bedroom. The desk in the corner of the room was littered with interrogation reports, reminding me that I still had to complete one for the trial I had that morning. I smiled at the memory of the stuttering dragon. It was innocent in a way few humans were nowadays. The purple lamp on the desk cast a calm glow about the room as I stared out the floor to ceiling windows, which could be opened to reveal a large balcony.
Of course, there was nothing less than flawless for council members. Although I hated to think of myself as one of them, it was true. Nothing I said or did could change that fact.
A knock on the door startled me out of my daydreams. I froze but remained silent with the hope that whoever it was would leave. The knock came again, louder and more insistent. Finally, I heard a loud sigh. "Clara, if you don't open this door I swear I'm going to burn it down. You know I'm not bluffing." a deep voice warned. I smiled and reached above me to unlock the door. The door opened slowly, pushing against my back, until the opening was large enough for my visitor to poke their head in the room. A pair of electric blue eyes met mine. "This is usually the part when you back away from the door so I can come in." the boy said, amused.
I rolled my eyes and made a show of getting up and stretching before walking over to sit on my king size bed with it's beautiful purple bedspread. Once I was settled, the boy entered the room, closing the door behind him. He sat next to me on my bed. "Hello Clara." he said while looking out the window.
"Hello Jake." I replied, also looking out the window.
"I heard you terrorized some council members today. Care to share?" Jake asked with a mock stern expression I saw through easily.
"You know now that you ask, not really." I mused. I felt the heat of his glare on the side of my face but continued looking out the window as if it were the most interesting thing I had ever seen.
"Come on," Jake whined, "You know I love stories about the council members being made fools of!"
I smirked. "You mean to say you don't worship the members of the Council of Seleman?"
"You know that's not what I'm saying." Jake grumbled. "Though it's not like the council does anything for me, anyways." I knew what he was talking about. Seleman as a whole was a good territory to live in. However, the closer you got to the capital, and the council, the more you could see the hatred between the mages and the non-mages. The mages were harassed so often that majority of them chose to hide their abilities if possible. Jake's power was still a secret to the council, despite the fact that he comes into contact with them frequently. "I could always light up an idea in their minds..." Jake said with a sly smile.
I rolled my eyes. Jake could control fire, and could even make a flame out of nothing. It really was impressive to watch, but the endless fire jokes that followed did get on my nerves sometimes. "Yeah, you do that." I teased. I laid back completely on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Jake copied me and laid back as well.
We sat in a comfortable silence for a couple of minutes. I broke the silence with a sigh. "I probably should go fill out that interrogation report now." I reluctantly said.
"Yeah, and I need to go to the mages meeting in half an hour." Jake replied. The mages meeting was for the mages in hiding who want to rebel against the council. Jake was the spy for that group since he came into contact with the council frequently. Even though I was technically part of the council, I knew none of the mages would go after me since I was their spokesperson, being the only mage on the council and all. Even though I didn't fully support the group, I also did nothing to stop them from plotting. If they wanted to rebel, fine by me, but I wasn't going to help them in any way. Getting caught in that plan would definitely not be worth it.
"Okay, be safe." I told him as my standard parting.
"I will." He replied with a reassuring smile. Jake got up and turned to give me one last smile before closing the door behind him. I stayed on my bed for a little bit longer before going to the desk to start the trial report.
