~~~~*Medic's POV*~~~~
He turned to see her standing there, staring in horror at the sight of her parents' mangled and burned bodies. He went over to her, picking her up and turning so she couldn't see them. Medic held her close, feeling a pang of sadness hit his heart as she shook, sobbing, still asking him why her parent's won't wake up. She begged him over and over to help them, but he knew he couldn't do anything. Scout jogged over, carrying a purple back-pack, a look of worry on his face.
"What happened?" Medic motioned over to the wreck, Scout frowning, understanding what he meant. He looked over at Sniper, speaking in a hushed voice, "Herr Sniper, ve should head back now." Sniper, nodded, understanding what he meant. "Sure, mate. Oi'll get the camper started."
Once they were in the camper, Medic still hadn't put her down, still trying to calm the sobbing child down. Since words weren't working, he started humming a lullaby, one his mother used to hum. She started quieting down a bit, falling into a light sleep on his shoulder. Medic let out a sad sigh, then looked over at scout, seeing that he was just looking out the window, deep in thought. He looked back at the sleeping girl with pity written on his expression. He gently kissed her cheek, careful not to wake her, then whispered in an apologetic and saddened voice, "Es tut mir leid, kleines Mädchen...i'm so sorry..."
~~~~*Rachael's POV*~~~~

She was woken by the camper shaking, signaling that they were back at the base, but she didn't lift her head up. She wasn't worried about her plush, for she had left her in medic's lab before they left.

She heard loud talking once they came in, then someone marched up to them. Before she new it, she was yanked away from Medic. She yelled out, kicking and flailing. She opened her eyes to see a mean looking man in an army-type outfit. She looked at him fearfully as he looked her over. He scoffed, then looked at Medic, who was trying his hardest not to dissect the man right then and there. "THIS is the little maggot that you and Scout brought back?! HAH! She's probably stupider than Heavy!" He laughed, then glared at Rachael, her still trying to struggle out of his grip, which he tightened, making her cry out in pain. "Listen here, you stupid little maggot! You won't survive one minute once the fighting starts! You are just a burden to everyone here, and will never be worth anything to anyone, DO YOU UNDERSTAND YOU PIECE OF SHIT?!!!!" Something in her snapped at this, she kicked out her leg, smacking him dead in the nose. She landed with a thud on the ground once he dropped her to cover his nose, but she got up, running off and heading straight for Medic's lab. She grabbed Ryo-Oki off of the cot, then ran into the closet, closing it and hiding in the furthest corner. She curled up, sobbing, but trying not to be too loud, not wanting to be found by the cruel man.

~~~~*Medic's POV*~~~~
After being within an inch of brutally killing Soldier, he quickly stomped off to his lab, locking the door and clenching his fists. He sat down in his office chair, putting his face in his hands, resting his elbows on his legs.
After a few minutes, he heard a quiet voice singing shakily from the closet.
"All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places...worn out faces..
Bright and early for the daily races
going nowhere...going nowhere...
And the tears are filling up their glasses...
No expression...no expressions...
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrows...
No tomorrow..no tomorrow...
And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad...
the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
and I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
when people run in circles it's a very, very...
Mad world.... Mad world...."
He looked over at the closet, then went over to it, taking a shaky breath before speaking.
"It iz alright now, Mädchen.. it iz just me..." there was no response. Medic sighed, putting his hand on the door nob. "I'm opening the door... I promise I von't hurt you..." He opened the door, looking inside to see her looking up at him with fear in her eyes, much like she had when they first met. He knelt down, looking at her with pitty before closing his eyes, tilting his head down.
"I..I'm zorry... I'm zo zo zorry...." He whispered this shakily, covering his mouth with one hand, letting out a few tears. He only stopped when he felt a small hand hold his other, much larger hand. She looked up at him, having moved in front of him, with a sad smile.
"It's alright. It's not your fault." She said, her voice light but shaking slightly, trying to hide her sadness, putting on a brave face for him. "He's right....I'm just a stupid kid..you guys shouldn't have to take c-care of me...I-I should leave..m-mama and p-papa are p-probably looking for me a-and...a-and..." Her brave facade shattered, her clinging to Medic desperately, bawling her eyes out. He, too, held her close, shaking his head.
"Nein, Mädchen...you're not shtupid..." "I-I know...mama and p-papa..they're not coming back..are they...?" He froze, then sighed, knowing he can't lie to her. "Nein...they're not....Es tut mir Leid..I'm sorry..." She didn't respond, but clung tighter to him. As if on cue, Archimedes flew down and landed on his other shoulder, cooing softly. Rachael lifted her head, looking over at her.
"You have a pet bird...?" "Ja, her name is Archimedez." The young girl reached slowly out towards the dove, letting her sniff her hand. The girl smiled and giggled when the white bird nudged her hand, letting Rachael pet her.
"She likes me!" She said, gleefully. Medic smiled softly at this, nodding. He carefully picked Rachael up, careful not to irritate the bruises Soldier had inflicted on her, and walked over to the examination table, lifting up her dress to see the damage. He frowned, finding large bruses in the shape of the man's hands, then neatened her dress again, only to hear a knock at the door. Medic walked over and opened it with an annoyed expression, seeing the masked form of the Pyro. The masked person talked muffledly, but judging by their motions, they wanted to meet Rachael. Medic gave them a glare that would make Heavy want to wet himself.
"Hurt one hair on her, Herr Pyro, and you vill be sorry" The man/woman let out a happy muffled noise, heading in and over to the girl, who was petting Archimedes. Rachael seemed nervous around them, but smiled when Pyro handed her a large lollipop, most likely from their own stash in their room. Medic sighed in relief, happy that they were getting along. A bit later, Pyro left, waving good-bye to Rachael, and walked out as Spy came in. He walked over to Medic, frowning.
"I 'eard about 'er parents." "Ja...there vas no vay to save zem. Zey vere dead long before ve got there." "Before we continue, ze Scout asked me to bring this to 'er." The frenchman handed Medic the purple backpack Scout had found. "Danke, Herr Spy." "I am sure you know why I came in here." Medic nodded, glancing back at the girl happily licking the candy Pyro had given her, swinging her legs back and forth. He looked back at Spy, speaking in a quieter voice. "Ja..I do." "I did some research. She 'as no relatives near that could care for her..so unless we decided to care for her, an orphanage would be our best option." Medic felt worry and unease cover him. He knows what places like that are like. When his mother died, his strict father sent him to a boarding school when he was 7, unable to care for him anymore. In all honesty, he didn't want her to feel like he did, scared and alone. The German sighed, weighing his options. He looked over at the girl, then back at Spy. "I have an idea, but I vould need to see how she feels about it." Spy looked curious, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? And w'at would that be?" Medic took a deep breath, looking Spy dead in the eyes. "I vas thinking of adopting her."
