"Remember, Eve, I'll always love you."  He had said to me only a day before he'd died.

I stare down at his lifeless body, tears welling in my eyes. He's gone. Never coming back.

I shake my head. I couldn't blame him for this. It wasn't his fault.

"Ready?" Ash said, grabbing my bag and tossing it into the trunk.

"Yeah." I said and climbed into the back seat.

Now I see him. His body flawless and beautiful. But this picture of him-- pale, lifeless-- will forever be etched into my mind. He had been killed immediately; at least he hadn't had much time to be in pain.

The car was speeding down the road. "Jake." I said to the driver, one of Ash's friends, "You should slow down."

He laughed. "Scared, Eve?"

In truth, I was. He was going so fast and the roads had been awful. The news had mentioned many car accidents along this road recently.

Bryce, sitting in the passenger seat, laughed too. "Relax, Eve. We'll be fine."

"Jake," Ash said, his voice firm. "Slow down."

He scoffed. "You're not the one driving--"

There were screams and shouts. The car skidded along the road. Everything was a blur. The car rolled and my head cracked against the window with each roll. Ash's seatbelt was off and he wrapped his arms around me, shielding me from shattered glass and the impact when the car stopped.

A single tear slides down my cheek. I press my fingertips to my lips and then to his, and whisper, "Goodbye."
