~Chapter One~
{Arthur}

I sighed into the chilly Autumn air, leaves crunching under my feet as I advanced through the forest. Students behind me chattered away, throwing sticks at eachother and calling names. They were very noisey wankers indeed. One threw a pebble at me, earning a glance.

I, Arthur Kirkland II, future ruler of the Kingdom of Spades, was getting hit by small rocks.

If they knew I was royalty they wouldn't do that. They'd bow and start apologizing.

And I didn't want that.

Royals were so stuck up and snotty and spoiled and demanding, and I just wasn't like that. So I convinced mother and father to send me to a commoner's academy and go by the name "England". Commoner's school is a bit... dusty, but it's fun overall. You have breaks and can run outside, and that's better then homeschool because the teachers are strict and orderly and you'd never get a second word, you get told once and that's it. What a riot.

Now, I have one friend, only one. He works as a servant most of the time, so he doesn't come to school all the time. He's the only other one who knows about my little secret. But him and I have our own 'secret' too. Our friendship. My family doesn't support me even speaking to commoners. I do it anyways.

I learned that from him.

"Ar- England! Over here!"

I smiled lightly as I ran over to my friend.
"Stop yelling, Jones." I murmured.
"Alfred." he corrected, slapping the back of my head.
"Don't." I warned as we made our way past the marketplace. "I see you waited for me."
"More like snuck for you." Alfred shrugged.
"You snuck out again?" I questioned calmly.
"Exactly!" he clamored, earning a elbow to the side.
"I told you to stop doing that." I sneered, wiping stray dirt off my face.
"Doing what?"
"Yelling."
"What? You mean like this?"
"Oh, you are hopeless."
"Hopeless? Well excuse me, at least I can cook without burning the whole kitchen down!"

I gaped. "You take that back!"
"Well," Alfred started, exaggerating the 'l'. "You'll have to catch me first!"
"Wait! You wanker!" I chased after my friend, flailing my arms in the air. The bloody kid was two years younger then me, at a mere twelve, yet he was two inches taller! Darn long-legs!
"What, ain't fast enough to keep up?" Alfred called, laughing.
"I'm fast enough! And 'ain't' isn't even a word!" I yelled.

What crazy young rebels we are, lying to our parents, the royal family even! But to us it was worth it. Worth it all.

But little did we know, later that night, everything would be shattered.

It was dinner in the Royal Courtroom. All was well, a good meal, boring conversation.

All was well.

I pushed the peas around on my plate with a unamused expression, doing various things with them. I never really liked peas, so I rolled them along to the mashed potatoes, pretending they were soldiers in battle. I found this quite fun, until mother cleared her throat and glared at me.

Sorry I mouthed, looking down mournfully. I forcefully shoveled the peas down my throat and glanced around the room. It seamed only me, mother, father, and a few high-ranking counsel members were here. Fantastic. I had no other siblings, so it often got lonely. My parents were always busy and never had time for me, so I normally had time to myself. That's how I met Alfred, you see.
