Chapter 1- My Shattered Morning

*three months earlier*

I suddenly awoke to my cat, Leo, knocking over several things off my shelf. They came crashing to the floor and what used to be a crystal vase full of yellow roses and a picture frame shattered into a million pieces. I tip-toed over that side of the room.

"Leo!" I screamed at him. He retreated to my bed and snuggled up against a pillow as if nothing happened. In my attempt to yell at my fat cat I forgot to watch my step and my bare heel dug into a piece of glass. A sharp pain jolted through my body as crimson red blood oozed out of my foot, leaving a blood stain on my recently washed white carpet. "Crap!" I winced in pain. My mom is gonna kill me...

I hopped on over to the wilting roses. They were dying. I picked them up gently and limped over to the picture frame. The picture of my mom and dad had been torn in half from Leo's sharp claws down the middle. Then with wilting yellow roses and a torn picture in hand, I made my way towards the bathroom to find a hello kitty Band-Aid.

I limped down the stairs and into the kitchen. The smell of cinnamon rolls filled my nose. My dad only makes these on special occasions... Have I forgotten something? I suddenly became aware of the awkward silence that fell into the room when I walked in. My mom's gaze shifted to my limping ankle.

"What happened?" she asked me curiously.

"Leo." I replied.

"That's it? A one word answer?"

"It's a long story." I told her then went to join my brother at the table, he avoided my eye contact. "Ok. What's happening!?!" I yelled across the room to my silent family. No one answered. "Hello? Are you going to ignore me?"

"The nutcase is coming to visit..." my brother mumbled. I froze.

"What? Uncle Oliver is coming to visit?" I said under my breath, not wanting to believe it.

"Kamryn! Don't call him that!" my mother screamed. Tears streamed down her cheeks as my dad pulled her in for a hug.

"Why the hell is he coming to visit?" Kamryn and I practically said in unison.

"He was released." my mother said barely audible. A dead silence fell upon all of us and strangled any words left to be said. After about five minutes of this I couldn't take it anymore so I got up out of my chair and rushed to the door. I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and grabbed my bag as I opened the door and ran to my car. I got inside and slammed the door, then I immediately blasted the radio and pulled out of the driveway. I started driving towards my friend Georgina's house and sent her a text.

Get dressed. We're going shopping. xoxo -Kayli
