It all just feels so weird. I’m not one to object to change, but moving from Iowa to California is a huge adjustment. I guess complaining won’t get me anywhere but on the plane faster. I really don’t have a choice. At least I will be a little closer to being able to achieve my dream. I guess I should explain what I’m rambling about.
My name is Casey Johnston and I am being transferred to Cali from the flyover state Iowa. Okay, that makes it sound like I am a juvenile delinquent. I’m not a delinquent, I’m in the foster program. I’m being transferred because “everywhere I’ve gone in Iowa just doesn’t suit me.” Doesn’t suit me my left eye. They are just moving me because I’ve been in trouble a couple of times. Nothing big, but I guess I’m just too much to handle.
Anyway, I’m being moved to California, and I’m going to live on my own with this family checking in on me from time to time. It’s supposed to be easier for a foster “kid” like me to become more independent, which I don’t really understand because I have been independent since I was 10, and I’m now 17 almost 18. I know what you are thinking, “Don’t 18 year olds get kicked out of the foster program?” Well since I’m basically the experiment for the independent program, they aren’t going to kick me out.
“CASEY KRISTINE GET YOUR BUTT DOWN HERE NOW IT’S TIME TO LEAVE. I WILL NOT SPEND ANY MORE TIME WAITING FOR YOU!”
Patty’s a gem isn’t she? She has been trying to get rid of me since I was 9. She finally got her day.
“Oh Patty, won’t you miss me? You obviously love me sooooo much! I’ll come and visit all the time and I will call every day!” I said in the most sarcastic tone ever. I am glad to be leaving. I’ve never liked her. She never did anything and sat on her fat butt while I took care of the house. That’s when I became independent and just almost never came back to the house, but to sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I could have it a lot worse than I do, but I’m glad I’m finally getting out of this small town.
*After the plane ride*
I got off of the plane and I was completely lost. I didn’t even know what to look for. Patty said I was supposed to look for a family of three holding a paper that said “Miss Johnston” but all I see is a scatter of people and I’m not going to lie, I’m freaking out. I hate being around a lot of people. I start to walk towards the only doors I can see and I swore I saw my name. I forgot I was supposed to be looking for my name so I just brushed it off and kept walking. This family must have gotten a picture of me or something because I hear “Casey! Casey wait!!” That’s when I realized I did see my name and this was the family that was going to be checking in on me.
As soon as they caught up with me, the lady took my bags from my hands and gave them to who I’m guessing is her son, and enveloped me in a hug. When she released, she introduced herself as Cheryl and said the two guys with her were George and Ellington. She kept talking but I zoned out. After what felt like 5 minutes, someone was shaking me. Apparently, Cheryl had asked me a question and was waiting for me to answer.
“Casey! Are you alright?”
“Oh! Uh, yeah. Sorry. Zoned out. What was the question?”
“I asked if you were sure you had everything?”
“Uh yeah. I’m sure.”
“Alright then! Let’s go!” This lady seems too bubbly. I don’t think I like it. Also, I’ve just realized, I’m not quite sure who is George and who is Ellington. This could be disastrous.
