CHAPTER FIVE:
The Wardrobe
Watching the light of the sun enter my still dusty room, I clutched hard onto my blanket not wanting to remember last night's events.
My head still ached for lack of sleep and my eyes were red and puffy, yet I decided it would be better if I just got up and started doing my household duties.
A frantic continuous knocking coming all the way downstairs echoed through the hallways. I attended to the door quickly before it wakes up the sleeping dragon upstairs.
A worried face of Felix Burkes greeted me when I opened the door. His usual cheerfulness and toothy smile gone.
''Hey, how may I help you?'' I asked curiously.
''Um.. I'm just here to inform you that a boy has been missing. For almost three days now, I think.'' he let out a sigh, as though he had been informing people all day.
''And if you ever see him or find out anything about his whereabouts, please contact me or the authorities.'' he finished as I stand there frozen on the spot.
He walked away slowly and I was a bit suprised when he turned around, answering the question I had in mind. ''The boy's name is Jared, by the way. The one I talked to you before, Em.''
Jared.
The word struck me like lightning as I pondered what was going on..
He was missing..
M-missing.. M-missing?!
T-then it's..
''Hey, Em? Are you.. okay?'' Felix shook my shoulders gently. He wore a worried face and up close the bags under his eyes were visible, meaning he hasn't been sleeping well.
''Yeah, just..'' shocked with disbelief? I didn't continue and just shook my head. ''I have to go back inside.''
''Oh, okay..'' Felix's eyes were full of curiosity at my sudden reaction. ''Guess I'll see you around.''
I pressed my back on the wooden surface when the door was finally closed. Am I nuts to even consider what the rabbit told me?
But what if.. it's true? Could I really just stand around and do nothing?
Fine. All I need is to prove to myself that I'm making it all up in my head. If I had to go back to the stupid attic, I would. But tonight when everyone's asleep.
The sound of my footsteps on the old creaking wooden floorboards revved my nerves up a notch. I almost did a double take back to my room, but the thumping of the cold metal surface of an old key I awkwardly wore around my neck with a dark green ribbon that I used to tie my hair with, reminded me of my firm decision of putting a stop to my madness.
The hallways were dark with no illumination other than the light of the moon going through the windows, but I moved swiftly realizing that I have unconsciously memorized the mansion's lay-out. Up to the smallest detail like where the furnitures are placed, so that I would not accidentally bump into them and make a thumping sound that can get me caught.
