“And in first place… Drum roll please everyone.” I rolled my eyes, getting rather impatient. “And in first place… January Costello!” Stacy stepped forward automatically, ready to make her acceptance speech, when she realized that she hadn’t won. “What?” She shrieked, marching up to the emcee. “Do you stupid incompetent fools not know talent when you see it?!” She spat, and the emcee’s brows lifted right up to his forehead.
Within seconds, security was dragging a kicking and clawing Stacy off the stage. I really pitied them, I know how it felt, after all I had had firsthand experience. Well, no time to dwell on that. I was too happy to care.
The emcee passed the mike over to me, but I really didn’t know what to say. So all I said were names. Five, very important, very precious names. “Mrs Martinez. Marco. François. Karinne. And most importantly, Stefon. Thank you so much for believing in me, you guys are true friends for life.”
Then I was surprised when the head judge came up onto the stage, a man in his fifties, taking over the mike. “Before we conclude this year’s remarkable Big Apple Beauty Pageant, I would like to say some words. Now, as my age may suggest to you, I have been in the pageant industry for quite a long time. And I must say, as the years go by, I look less and less forward to each monotonous, exactly-the-same pageant. But tonight, tonight I am presented with this young man right in front of me, and that has jolted me back up in my seat. And no, don’t you even think for a second he has won only because of the fact that he has such bravery to enter this commonly thought to be female competition. But I must say, his courage should be commended.”
There were several hoots at this, but the judge smiled kindly, lifting a hand. “Now calm down, calm down. As I was saying, for the first time in my life, I saw a boy in a beauty pageant! What a surprise! Pleasant or not though, we’d have to see. So I studied him with so such strictness, and such high expectations, and not even once did he fail them. He is so real, but he is also versatile, and he can jump back and think quickly on his feet. He is truly genuine, passionate, and you can see in his eyes the fiery blazing love he has for the things he does. And that, makes him the ultimate Beauty Queen, oops or should I say, Beauty King.”
“Good job sonny,” he turned to me and ruffled my hair, “I look forward to seeing you more in the future.” With that, he clapped, causing the ballroom to once again fill with applause.

“Soooooo…” I make my way over to Stefon, stuffing my hands into the pockets of the pair of jeans that I had changed into. Ahhh, the comfort of normal clothes. With pockets. “Sooooo…” Stefon arched an eyebrow at me, looking amused. I suddenly felt a wave of shyness overtaking me, and I could feel my cheeks burning red. “Uhhh, I guess I’ll go talk to my mum. Catch you later!”
I was ready to run off, when Stefon caught me by the shoulders and spun me around, pressing me into his chest. “Aww, aren’t you cute when you’re shy.” Stefon teased, messing up my hair. I whined and pouted, struggling to get out of Stefon’s embrace, but finally just gave in, snuggling up to his warmness.
A moment of silence settled between us, and I cleared my throat, looking up into Stefon’s striking cobalt blue eyes, with that piercing streak of violet. “Stefon, I just want to say how sorry I am. I got so angry, so carried away with trying so hard to win, that I forgot what mattered more. And that’s you. Forgive me pwease?” I widened me eyes into my best puppy dog look, making him laugh lightly.
“Don’t be silly, you weren’t in the wrong. I was. I knew how important this pageant was to you, but I insulted it. But that’s only because this isn’t my first time working in a pageant, and Stacy’s viciousness had gotten all around. I knew she was plotting something against you, but I didn't know what, just that I couldn’t let you get hurt. It would break my heart. So I made sure to look out for you, and when I hadn’t been there for you that time you jumped off the landing, I got so mad and frustrated with myself, telling myself that it was my entire fault you had gotten hurt. I’m sorry…”
I didn’t know what to say. Never before had I felt so much care from someone towards me. So I just tiptoed and pressed my lips gently against Stefon’s, caressing his face with my right hand. I was about to press harder, when Stefon stopped abruptly and pulled back. I was confused, and cocked my head to the side. Huh?
“Well… You know when you said I was a friend in that acceptance speech of yours earlier…? I really think we should become more…” I couldn’t help it, I giggled. “Is that your way of asking me to be your boyfriend? How smooth.” Stefon scratched his head sheepishly, clearly embarrassed, but returned his serious gaze onto me. “So…? What do you say? I dropped my smile, looking back at him intensely, “Yes, I say yes.”
