Stef's POV:

"No way!!!"

"What happened?" my friend, Norma Dewan, says to me.

We're at school, and our homeroom teacher, Mr. Steadman, has given us back our marked math tests. Norma, our other friend Natasha Bhavsar, and I are looking at our tests.

"I got a B+ on my test," I grumble.

"It's not that bad, I got a B+ on my test as well!" exclaims Natasha. We high five each other, and Norma looks at her test.

"I got an A-," Norma says.

"Still, that's better than a B+!"

"And a B+ is better than a B. Stef, everyone's going to get a B+ from time to time!" Norma sighs.

"Yeah, but I was aiming for an A- this time!" I groan. See, this is why I feel so bad for my friends, they have to endure my complaining.

I continue sulking about my B+ when I get home, and we're supposed to show our tests to our parents, get them to sign the test, and we have to show the signed test to Mr. Steadman.

I show Mom my math test, and then she starts telling me where I could have improved instead of the things I did right.

"See, Stef, when you're adding a positive number and a negative number, the sum takes the sign of the bigger number..." corrects Mom.

"Whoops..." I say nervously.

"Stef, 4 + -8 is not 12!"

"Huh? I thought -8 was a positive number. I didn't see a minus sign on the left of it!"

"Stef, when there are two minus signs next to each other and the first number is positive, then the other number also becomes a positive and you're supposed to add them together!"

"I must have forgotten that."

Mom signs my test, and then tells me, "You could do with some more practice on integers. Want me to print some worksheets for you?"

"No thanks, I've had enough of integers for today," I say in response.

I sit in the living room, and check my email on my laptop while I wait for Ryan and Dad to get home. Ryan and I don't go home from school at the same time, because we go to separate schools. Ryan goes to Lakemore Public School, the school closest to our house. I go to Silverdale Public School, where I'm part of the Scholastic program (it's like a gifted program).

Stef's POV:

"No way!!!!"

That's the first thing I hear when Ryan and Dad come home.

"What happened?" I groan, and go over to Ryan, who's looking at his marked math test. Dad shouts hi to us, and then he dashes up the stairs to his and Mom's bedroom."You got a marked math test too?"

"Yeah!" Ryan exclaims.

"Was it an addition and subtraction quiz?"

"Yeah!"

"Did your teacher say you needed improvement?"

"What's improvement?"

"That's when you need to get better at something. What mark did you get?"

"A mark?"

"Oh my goodness," I mutter. Ryan's kind of stupid, no offense, but it's the truth. I look at his test, and I am extremely surprised when I see what mark his teacher has given him.
