I slapped it back down on the table and shot daggers at Jayde and Alouette, who now sat across from me; gazing at me with identical innocent expressions on their annoyingly radiant faces. I spoke after a few minutes of silence.

“You had something to do with this, I assume.” Without asking I knew they did, of course. They always did.

“We were only defending ourselves,” Alouette protested, pouted. I raised my eyebrows at this, “He was being a real jerk! He started pulling and grabbing at me, and I . . . well, I-I lost it.” She mumbled playing up the innocent act. Jayde bobbed her head in agreement.

A low, aggravated growl left my throat as I slammed my fist down on the table, leaving a sizeable dent in the wood.

“You can’t just ‘lose it’ Lou!” I screeched, “What the hell is wrong with you! What if you’d been caught?!”

Jayde got up so fast her chair toppled over backwards. “We were being careful.” The look in her eyes failed to mirror her calm tone. “No one saw anything, obviously. The papers even said so.”

“And? That doesn’t mean a damn thing! Someone could have seen something and was just waiting for the right moment. Someone could be stepping forward this instant and reporting to the police. I am so sick of this! Every damn time you two slip up I have to go back and clean up your mess! I’m sick of this! Sick!” I punctuated that last word with another fist slam.

Everly appeared suddenly, scowling and looking decidedly rumpled.

“What, somebody tell me, in God’s name is all this damned yelling about?”

“Nothing!” I screamed in her face, “Not a damn thing.” I turned and stalked out of the room. Behind me I could hear Jayde comforting her twin, who was sniffling.

Bullshit! I thought viciously.

I stepped out of the house into the cool morning air, feeling sick. For once it did little to calm me. “Indie!” Everly following close behind me; yanked hard on my arm until I turned to face her.

“What’s up with you?” she asked face filled with concerned puzzlement.
