Yesterday I read the paper,
I smiled when I read the horoscope,
It said I would have a lucky day,
Full of joy and fortune and hope.
Feeling good, I left for school,
Though I'd forgot a paper that was due.
And then I got a long detention,
Because in math, I just couldn't pay attention.
It wasn't my fault, I tried to protest,
There was a wad of gum under my desk.
It got stuck on my left hand,
and then on my hair's frizzy strands.
Besides I hadn't had lunch before,
I had dropped my food when I was hit by the door.
So I left school bored and black-eyed,
My spirits weren't that high.
On my way back, it began to rain,
And then my head began to pain.
A car drove past and splashed me with puddle water,
Because it knew I was dying to be wetter.
When I finally got home, my mother smirked,
She asked me if my horoscope worked.
I ground my teeth and told her no,
In my day, there had been no joy or hope.
To that she laughed like a retarded seal,
She collected herself enough to squeal,
"My dear precious, genius daughter,
You were reading yesterday's paper."
