The Brookheimers had never been rich, though Elliot's mother had come from a family with money, and passed onto her daughters a perpetual hunger for something more than the middle class life to which they were accustomed. The house was tastefully decorated, but visitors and family members alike could never shake the feeling that something was missing from this shelf or that cabinet, though they could never pinpoint exactly what it was. A feeling of discontent permeated. She feels it the moment she steps over the threshold. The sensation making her feel uncomfortable and ill at ease, like the summer she was a lifeguard at an Ohio theme park, and she had to stand in cold water all day.
