"Hello, Lolaaaaaa."

"Hey there Viktor. What's shaking?"

"What is shakeeeng?" He sent her a confused look.

Gaia laughed. "How are you playing?"

Viktor chewed his cheek. He rubbed his wrinkled olive skinned fingers over his lips, taking the question far too seriously. "I have beaten every one."

"I knew you would," Gaia almost yelled. "You're the best!"

He shrugged off the compliment. "Zank you. You are very good girl."

Gaia was speaking loudly but she could see that Viktor was reading her lips and he was becoming tired. He sat patiently waiting for his next opponent to arrive that probably wouldn't come. He had his favourite chessboard set up and by its side sat his own personal mascot; an old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figure. He would have found it in someone's trash can and claimed it as his own. Gaia was fairly certain that it was Donatello. Viktor never played a game of chess without him by his side. Gaia probably would have joined him except she only had twenty cents in her pocket. Instead, she sat on the bench beside him, closed her eyes and tilted her head back.

She loved this park more than the house she was forced to say in with Steven and Mindy. This was her favourite place in the world. Viktor was around the ninety year old age mark but he was her favourite person. And sure he thought her name was Lola but she didn't mind.

Who says I don't have a life? she thought to herself. She stretched her arms over her head and felt the fabric of her shirt lift over her belly button. The smell of hot food filled the air, a mix of roasted peanuts, hotdogs and toffee popcorn. She planned that one day she would arrive with more than just twenty cents and buy something huge to eat and wolf it down without taking a break to breathe. Suddenly a shadow fell over her face and she opened her eyes. A thirteen year old Spanish boy stood over her.

"Hi Alejandro, if you're looking for a game I'm no good," she greeted him. Alejandro was a self-claimed poet and Gaia's second-favourite person. He was such a chess whiz that he earned around two hundred dollars every week playing suckers who underestimated him for his age and size. Today his usual confidence was gone and Gaia could sense it.

"You okay Al?" she asked him, sitting up. As she scanned her eyes around the park something caught her attention. A swastika. It was new, the white paint bright as freshly fallen snow. Gaia's stomach dropped to her butt. Was it a sign for her? Could someone know about her mother's family being destroyed by the Holocaust? No. She was absolutely being paranoid. No one knew about her Jewish background. What with blonde hair and blue eyes, it never crossed people's minds which annoyed Gaia. Her mother had been annoyed by it too since she had had to deal with the same thing with her hair bright blonde and her blue eyes as well. Everyone else around her seemed to be ignoring the swastika so she let it slip from her thoughts. She focused on Alejandro again. He wasn't as jumpy as usual or witty for that matter.

"You should go home Gaia," he said to his sneakers though it was meant for Gaia.

"What's going on Al?" she asked him.

"It'll get dark soon," he said flatly.

"I know Al, it usually does," she chuckled. She noticed that he was wearing a brand new jacket from a well-known label. It looked stiff and uncomfortable. "You should be watching out," he continued.

"For what exactly?"

"It's just dangerous."

Gaia stood up and pushed her hair out of her face. She looked down at him with her arms folded and gave him a stern look. "Cut the bullshit Al. What's going on?"
