The next day during study block I went back to the auditorium in search of him. My heart was beating so fast before I walked inside I felt like it might beat right out of my chest. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true. I finally got up the nerve to open the door to look for him. I looked and….. nothing. He wasn’t there. I sighed and decided since I was already here I might as well relax and listen to music.
I closed my eyes for a few minutes, lost in the music oblivious to anything else. A few minutes later I opened my eyes again and he was right there. Sitting right in front of me staring at me again. I was so shocked I jumped nearly a foot in the air. He laughed. And that laugh made me melt. We sat there staring into each other’s eyes for about a minute before I finally got up the nerve to say something.
“hi” I said nervously and smiled
He smiled back at me “hey”
And then, being the klutz I am, I dropped my iPod making a complete fool of myself. “Shit!”
We both bent down to get it at the same time, but he got it first. He looked at it in his hand and then looked at me knowingly, smiled, and said “This is your life isn’t it?”
I smiled sheepishly and said “Yeah kinda”
He handed it back to me and when I reached for it our hands touched and a shock went up my arm. As he let go he said “Well then you wouldn’t want to lose it then, now would you?”
“No. never. I don’t know what I would do without it” I said.
“yeah I feel the same way. Music means so much to me.” He said.
We sat in silence for a few minutes. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence. I felt comfortable with him, like I could be myself. With everyone else I felt like I had to fill the silence with words or something, but not with him. He continued to look at me, as if he was trying to remember every detail. I don’t know what he found so interesting. I had simple black hair, plain skin, eyes ringed in eyeliner, skinny jeans, and a regular tee-shirt on.
The bell rang and he smiled at me, grabbed his stuff, and started to walk away. Then he stopped and looked over his shoulder.
“I’m Cole by the way” he said
“Beckett” I said. He smiled like he liked my name. He nodded his head in a goodbye and walked out the doors putting his headphones in his ears as he walked. My heart was beating so fast I swear it felt like my ribs were about to break open.
I went through the rest of my day in a haze. I half-assed everything in class. My mind felt like it was in a fog and the only thing that would get through was Cole and the way he looked at me.
There must have been something wrong with me because on the walk home from school I had completely tuned out the world and I didn’t even have my headphones in. I was so out of it that I didn’t even notice it when Cole walked up next to me.
“Come with me” he said with a smile “I want to show you something.” He grabbed my hand and gently pulled me to the right. The moment his hand grabbed mine a shock wave went up my arm and I was so glad that Toby and Kelsey were both at a friend’s house tonight.
