Melanie's POV
First day of senior year. First day back to my personally specialized hell. I think that I would like school a lot more if it weren't for him. I don't even know why, but he takes it upon himself to embarrass me into oblivion every day. We used be friends. A very long time ago. He's a jock now. Captain of the freaking football team. And then there's me. I'm one of those quiet girls. I don't do much that's out of my comfort zone, I like music more than I like people, and I've certainly never had a boyfriend or anything. I know, the senior who hasn't had her first kiss. That's me.
If you ask anyone who knows me, they'll probably tell you I'm boring. I'm perfectly content with my life, though. I don't feel the need to rebel or risk my life, everything is perfect just the way it is.
School will be better this year. I won't be embarrassed, or made fun of, or anything like that. I'll get good grades, maybe even get asked to prom. It'll be great.
After I finish my pep talk in the mirror, I head downstairs for breakfast. "Good morning, mom!" I smile. "Hi honey! You look so pretty! Isn't that too much makeup for school?" She replies. "Mom. I'm 17. I can drive. I think I know how much makeup is the right amount." I laugh. "Well, I still think you're doing your makeup like this for that Luke boy." She says.
"What!? No way! Mom, he's been the biggest jerk to me since freshman year. There's no way in heck that I would ever like him in any way, shape, or form. Got it?" I snap. "Fine, fine." She says. "So, Melanie. Do you have a boyfriend yet?" "Nope! I haven't found a guy who I like enough to devote myself to him like that. You know?" I answer. "Okay, sweetie, I'm proud of you for holding your ground like that." She smiles. "Thanks! Okay, I'm going to go now, I'm bringing Emma to school and we're getting Starbucks on the way. See you later!"
I walk out the door and I'm so happy that conversation is over. I get into my old, red truck, and start blasting Nirvana's "Come As You Are," my favorite song. I pull up to Emma's house, one block from mine, and she gets into my car, turning off the music as usual. "I don't know how you can stand that noise." She complains, like she does every day.
"Well good morning to you too." I reply. "Whatever. Anyway, I heard that Connor is throwing a party tonight! We should totally go!" Emma smiles. "Em, you know I don't drink, I can't dance, and I don't even know how to act at a party. I hope you have fun, though!" I say. "Melanie. It's senior year. You haven't even been to one party yet. Please? We can go shopping after school!" She begs. "Fine." I groan. "But I will not consume ANY alcohol, and I will not have sex. Got it?" "Got it!" She squeals.
What did I get myself into?
