Chapter 2 - High School ExcileTwo big doors.
Two big doors that awaited my fate after that shit mission I had just failed.
Once I had got back to the institution, I was rushed to The Boards office.
The Board are a group of trusted people who put us teenagers on missions. They give us a cover and information they have found. They also know when you end up in a bit of a pickle and send the Back Up Force.
They're a group of 5 people who were previous Secret Teenage Agents. These 5 people were the best of the charts. The smartest. The fittest. The most determined and not only that, those who had never failed a mission. Not even one.
That's right... this Board is pretty much full of the elite agents that had passed through the institution and were granted trust over the years.
Every Institution has a Board. This institution is based in Washington D.C. There are others all around America although, we dont exactly contact them unless we really need help.
Here goes nothing... I gulped as I held a shaky hand on the door handle and twisted it open.
I felt myself sweat as the door softly swung open. As i said before, i have never failed a mission until now, meaning... I have never actually been in The Boards office.
I took in the large hall-like space that consisted of flags, maps, pictures of legendary Agents who have passed away on the wall. The floor was polished wood and the ceiling held a big bright chandelier. On the opposite end of me, stood five thrown-like chairs filled with the Board.
My head slumped as I watched their faces turn from blank to sorrowful. Knowing that this mission was my first one I had failed.
It was one fail... but it was a crucial fail...
"Ciara Gibbons. Come" A low voice boomed with authority.
I took the remaining steps to fill the space until I stood infront of the five pairs of dissaproving eyes. I felt so ashamed I held my head low and shifted my eyes to the ground. Not wanting to see that dissapointed look.
"Ciara. Look at us"
I looked up and I felt my gut wrench, twist and turn. Knowing I was going to be in a lot of trouble.
"Ciara. Your mission yesturday was appauling. You didn't cover your tracks when searching information about Louis Demöur. You didn't think about a plan before-hand like you usually do. You were thinking predictably as if you had never set foot in a mission before and most of all, you nearly jeopridized the secrecy of all Secret Teenage Agent Institutions around America"
I cringed at the mention of my mistakes. I mean, I know I fucked up... but hearing them being listed off just screwed it for me.
"Im sorry. I didn't mean to." I apologised, fighting to stop myself from looking at the floor again. That will only make them think im weak, and that is one thing I am not.
The whole Board sighed before The Board member I familiarised as Dean continued.
"We know you didn't mean to Ciara. We just didn't expect such a big dissapointment from you"
I felt my heart drop. It was one mission. Surely they wouldn't hold it up against me.... right?
I cleared my throat pushing back any emotion away.
"I know, and again im sorry. I swear it wont happen again" I promised.
"Yes. It wont happen again"
I sigh, feeling relief swell into my veins. Thinking i was safe... But I thought too soon.
"Because you're being exciled out of the institution" he finished
My eyes widened in horror. Exciled out of the Institution? Where would i go? What about all the training ive done? What about all the missions ive accomplished? The people Ive saved? Im the most elite Agent there is in this Institution. Surely they wouldn't let me go? They cant actually do that right?
Of course they can you idiot! They're The Board! They can do anything! My inner sub said as I groaned internally.
I blanked my face when I realised I revealed too much emotion. I cleared my throat before continuing.
"Excile, sir?"
"Yes." He nods "You will be sent away to a family memeb-"
"Family?" I croaked, interupting him.
I dont have a family. My mum died in a mission when I was five and my dad... well he isn't an agent so... my mum had to leave him. She had to do what was right for not only her, but for her country. I also have no siblings so who else could their seriously be?
There was line of sympathetic smiles and I held in my anger as I felt weak at their lame gesture.
"Yes. Your mother has a sister back in Georgia. You will be staying with her there. Although she is your spy mothers sister, she does not know your mother was an agent but she does know that she... has passed" Dean said slowly, choosing his words carefully as if I would break down. But I wont. Not for them. Not for my no father. Not even for my dead mother. Not for anyone. Ever.
"There, you will live the life of a normal teenager." He continued "We are dislodging you from the system meaning, you will be under no supervision of any Institutions. You will no longer have futhur contact with us nor will your gadgets be on"
"Does my knife and gun count as gadgets?" I asked, they all had smiles on thier faces. Hey, they are good weapons. My babies. I am not leaving them in this joint. Hell no
"No. You may take any hand held materials. So anything that does not go by the institution, is all yours. Although, we'd advise you not to use it on anyone at school." Dean said with a knowing smile, which I politely returned.
School...
I took everything in. My breathing hitching as I felt myself panic a bit. Im going to be living the normal teenage life. Im going to be going to school. Im going to make friends. But wait.... how do you make friends?
When you were brought up in an Agent Instituition, you would know that you're pretty much on your own. You dont interact with others your age. You dont even see others your own age.
The Board made it this way so we learnt how to be independent. Learnt not to get distracted in training. They thought - No interaction with another being your age, means no distractions.
Even our classes. They aren't your normal student filled classes. Its a one off tutoring session in your room. Unless you have Physical Training - such as fighting and using guns - then you're in the gym. But even then, you dont see any others apart from our tutors. So me going into the 'normal world' isn't gonna be easy.
"When am I leaving?" I ask.
"Tonight. You are starting school tomorrow"
If they saw any sign of hurt on my face, they didnt show it. I cleared my throat and nodded, not trusting my voice.
"You need to hand in your badge, access card and any gadgets to the front office. Although, you will gain them back when you have returned to work with us on the service"
when you have returned to work with us on the service... my eyes widened and they all smiled. Im coming back? I thought...
"You are only on excile Ciara. Meaning you will be back. Until we think you are really ready to come back, then you will be sent back. You dont think we would let our best agent go now would you?" He smiled knowingly, reading my mind.
My mouth gaped open in surprise and no words came out so I decided to just nod.
"Good, now that that is cleared. Are there any questions?"
I recomposed myself with a pop in my leather jacket and a clear of the throat.
"Uh yes." I started "do I still get to keep my car?"
