"Daniel James Howell, get your butt out of bed!"

Dan groaned and rolled out of bed. He threw his uniform on and ran down the stairs, grabbing some toast and lunch as he sprinted out of the door and down the street. It was 9:15, he was going to be late.

He was always late, so it was no surprise to Mrs Pentland when he burst into the classroom at 9:45 with half a piece of toast and crumbs covering his face.

"You're late again Mr Howell."
"No fuck!"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me, they all heard me, I said a swear! Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck!"
"I'm sorry Mr Howell but you're going to get an after school detention for this."
"Like I fucking care!"

Dan threw the rest of his toast in the bin and sat down at a table by himself. Mrs Pentland sighed and started talking, but Dan had already tuned out. He hated school. He hated it more than anything else. He knew that education was important, but surely there were less traumatising ways of getting said education.

The bell rang and he stood up and almost reached the door before he heard Mrs Pentlands voice say, "Mr Howell, please wait a minute."

He argued it over in his head and decided if he stayed he might not get a suspension. He may not like school or his teachers but he had a few assessments in the next week and he needed to pass them to go on to Year Nine.

The last kid leaves the classroom leaving Dan and Mrs Pentland.
"Mr Howell, I..."
"Okay, just call me Dan, I don't like Mr Howell."
"Well, okay... Dan." She said as if tasting the name in her mouth, "Do you know why I kept you behind today?"
He replied in a sarcastic tone, "Because I've been a very naughty boy, saying words of the English language while in English class." He topped it all off with a throw of his hand in an exasperated manner.
Miss Pentland sighed, "Look, Daniel. I'm worried about you. You've been acting out a little bit more during class recently... is everything alright?"
Dan rolled his eyes. The question touched him, but he would never admit it, "Yes, Miss. Everything is just dandy." He tried to throw as much sarcasm into that last word as possible.
"Look Daniel, you probably think I'm out to get you," Dan snorted, gaining a disappointed look from Miss Penland, "but I'm going to sign you up for a school support group. I will inform your parents and..." Miss Pentland must have seen to look on Dan's face, "It's for the best, Daniel-"
"Dan! Call me Dan! Not Mr Howell, not Daniel. Dan!" Dan grabbed his books and stormed out of the room, off to his next class. Miss Pentland let out a small sigh and headed for her desk, to get ready for her next class.
