The Hydra family is by far the most unusual one.
The one you see above is the now-extinct species, the Cave Hydra. Most of the information about this species is unknown, since it went extinct in year 753, BC. The cause of this was because of over hunting by the Romans, since of course everything that was "out of the ordinary" were slain by Roman nobles.
Cave Hydras are said to be the largest species, because of their thick necks, and large heads and bodies. Apparently, many hunters have killed this species just for it's scales (which are either brown or purple) and for it's many horns.Hydras are only born with 1 - 2 heads, and as it grows in years, it's heads multiply. If the "new" heads are damaged or destroyed, they will naturally grow back in a couple months. But, if the original head(s) get damaged or destroyed, they're permanently gone. This is why most Hydra species are smart, and try to confuse an enemy by moving it's heads around swiftly and end fights quickly, so it's not in any harm of losing a head forever.
Most species live in swampy areas, and are excellent swimmers.
With multiple heads, all with lightning-fast speed, the Hydra is able to consume a necessary amount of food to stay healthy and to sustain it's strength. In Mid evil times, depictions of winged Hydras are common, since back then the only dragon species that were known had wings. All Hydra species are wingless, so their swimming and acid abilities are powerful and unique.
