"This is spooky" Mira whispered as they crept along the ivy eaten walls.
"No kidding" Jack murmured. The last time he had seen this place, it had be golden and colorful, and full of life. Now it looked abandoned, the intricate carvings, towers, and buildings crumbled.
"Her fairies should be right over here" Jack whispered to Mira "In the Tooth room"
"Will they be alright Jack" Mira said hesitantly "I mean, I don't think a single tooth has been collected since you guys dispersed. Grandpa still had, like 3 baby teeth saved."
"He...saved them" Jack said surprised
"Yeah. He never gave up hope that you guys would someday come back. He had me save mine as well. My mother had her teeth saved, but she kinda gave up on that stuff after my dad... left."
Jack felt a surge of anger. "He just left" he said a little harsher than he intended. "No reason, or anything."
"Yeah" Mira said bitterly. "No note or anything. Just out of the blue. I came home one day and he wasn't there. The next day when I came home, Mom was crying, said he was gone forever. She wouldn't tell me where he went, I don't even know if she knows. She won't even talk about him now, pretends he doesn't exist."
"Thats harsh" Jack said
"It's her way of dealing with it. Sometimes... well I don't know"
"What?"
"Well" Mira said uncomfortably "Sometimes I get the feeling that she really doesn't remember him. Or thinks he wasn't real."
"Kinda hard to do with you around." Jack said.
Mira smiled thinly. "Yeah I think that's why she doesn't like to bring him up. I don't even remember his name. Grandpa and Great-Aunt Sophie didn't like to mention him either. They would just change the subject whenever he was mention"
"No wonder, considering what he did to your Mom and you."
"They didn't really like him before that either. Funny now that I think about it, Jamie never really was around Dad..."
"Odd" Jack remarked. "Jamie liked pretty much everybody. Even Cupcake"
"Who?"
"One of Jamie's old friends...Here we...are" Jack gazed around the room in horror. The room was silent and everywhere he could see there were tooth fairies, as still and quiet as death.
"Are they...?" Mira's voice quavered
Jack knelt down by a fairy. He could just barely make out the rise and fall of her breath.
"No" he said shakily "Not dead. They just don't have enough belief to wake up."
"There's got to be one of them still awake, right" Mira squeaked. "I mean, I still believe"
"I don't know" Jack admitted "The last time we were down to only one believer, the fairies had just lost their ability to fly. It's been so long though, I don't know what effect that had..."
"What do we do now?"
"I think we should look to see if any are still ok" Jack said, scratching the back of his head. "If there aren't any, then we'll be back to square one."
"Alright" Mira said in a small voice. Jack looked over at her, and realized that she was more upset by the fairies fate than she was letting on.
"You alright?" He asked awkwardly, not really knowing what to do.
"Yeah" She said, turning away "I'll be fine. Let's just get this over with" They spent the next couple hours searching for any awake fairies. The more they stayed in the Tooth Palace
"Jack!" Mira called finally "I found one...She's not doing so well though..." Jack rushed over. On a table lay a fairy. She seemed to be asleep just like the rest, but Jack saw her eyes flutter, and then he recognised her.
"Baby Tooth!" He exclaimed
