Chapter 1 –
"Love that remains longest in your heart is the love unreturned
The party or more of Ball really, had only begun but already the mansion was crowded like no tomorrow. Everyone knows Mystic Falls enjoyed nothing more than a good party, but the fact that it was full of a family of Original vampires, plus the Salvatore brothers and humans, it could not end well. Although, Elena was the only think so, she took a deep breath as the mahogany doors were pulled open, she clutched her black, silk shawl closer to her body as she took those important steps across the threshold. The orchestra were playing quietly in the corner with the crowd expanding out across the foyer. The first thing to cross her mind was how huge it was, there was a grand marble staircase that made the Lockwood’s look miniscule, next to that there was grand oak doors which led into the Ball room. My, my the Mikaelson’s have really outdone themselves.
Elena smiled and gently pulled her shawl off and handed it to the willing servant, maybe tonight wouldn’t be so bad after all, but before she could enjoy anything she would have to find Esther.
“Surprise, surprise”
Elena closed her eyes momentarily and looked over to her right to see none other than Damon standing by her side.
“Well, what have we got here”
What was it with the Salvatore brothers appearing one after the other? It really did get annoying after a while.
“Good evening Stefan...Damon” Elena smiled and nodded to them both, keeping her eyes on the crowd for any sign of Esther.
“What are you doing here Elena? You’re not supposed to be here”
“Well, I am and I’m not leaving until I find out what Esther wants”
Elena took a step forward but Damon blocked her path with a smirk on his face.
“Not tonight Elena, you can’t protect yourself and I am not willingly going to let you walk into the lion’s den alone” She raised her eyes to look into his ice blue ones, trying to read him for any sign of weakness but as always he had his ‘bad boy’ face on.
“Look Damon, we already discussed this, I am going to see Esther she might be secretly on our side”
“And what if she’s not Elena? What if this is just some elaborate ploy to kill you huh? Did you think about that?”
Elena rolled her eyes, Damon always had a thing for the dramatics, she sighed and looked away from him, with Damon around there was no way she was going to get into Esther’s office alone, she may aswell humour him for a while and figure out a plan.
“Fine, Damon. Now, I think it’d be best if we joined the party. It looks a bit suspicious us three standing here” Elena took a breath and put a smile on her face, both brothers stood at each side of her and offered her their arm but as she took them she couldn’t help but think how much she felt like Katherine at that moment. As they entered the foyer they were greeted with a champagne toast, Elena smiled and thanked the waiter before glancing around the crowd again. Her eyes fell on a young, handsome man, although that was an understatement. His jaw line was well defined and his brown tousled hair made him look like a Greek god, he was speaking to Elijah and that’s when it dawned on her, he was the youngest brother of the Mikaelson family and the only one she hadn’t met yet.
Kol.
As if someone called his name, Kol turned to meet the eye of Elena, they shared a brief silent exchange before he smiled and raised his glass to her. She returned the gesture before glancing to see if Salvatore’s were still with her, and amazingly they weren’t.
