Chapter Two

That low grumbling growl was so unfamiliar to me. I knew it must've been some sort of animal. I drew my dagger and started the Flame spell in my left hand. I crouched down and looked all around me... Only to find a huge saber cat about thirty feet ahead of me.

I saw it pounce towards me and felt that this was the end of the line for me. Just like the saying goes, I saw my life flash before my eyes. I felt disappointed that after all my dreaming and planning I was going to come to an end with the swipe of the claws of the giant cat. And even though I knew I was going to die I couldn't bring myself to throw the fire from my hands so I just ran to hide in a tree.

Afraid for my life, I climbed as high as I could. This however wasn't the best of ideas, seeing as I had just treed myself and had no way down as it stalked me like its prey.

All of the sudden, I saw this iron arrow hit the beast in the shoulder blade. I looked around and saw no one around. This scared me even more. Yet, it relieved me as well since it distracted the cat. I looked through the barren branches to try to find the culprit. I saw know one though.

It seemed as though the arrow didn't do any damage to the animal though, and whoever did this noticed that too. A fireball came shooting from the mountain side in front of me and hit the saber cat. I saw that the blast had destroyed the cat, and as I was going to climb back down the tree I almost got badly burned.

The fire had moved from the fallen leaves through to the trunk of the tree and was spreading quickly up towards me. I was afraid to yell for help because if the attacker was anyone bad they may come to kill me. But if they were gone, I might not get out of this. The tree was too tall to jump out of so that was a no go. I had no other choice than to yell for help. I looked all around and moved up another branch to avoid the fast burning fire. I sighed and them let out a loud, girly scream as to give the "damsel in distress" appearance.

I waited a few minutes and tried getting away from the fire, but with no luck. I looked around and still no one. Then, I heard a peculiar noise. And then something even more peculiar happened. This ice, frosty ball thing, similar to the fire ball, came and took out the fire. At the same time, however, it hit the tree with such force that it started to fall over.

"Somebody help!" I exclaimed in fear.

"I'm coming!" a man's voice shouted from a short distance away. I saw a tall, lanky, masked figure running down the side of the mountain dressed in Mage robes. He ran quickly but somehow clumsily.

He swiftly made his way to the tree and held his hands out for me to jump in. Reluctantly, I released my grasp from a branch and leaped in to his arms.

He let me down and apologized. "I'm so sorry! I was trying to help you with the saber cat but I didn't mean to almost kill you. I was gonna just leave after it died, but I heard you screaming. I'm very very sorry."

"Hey, it's okay," I said quietly and shyly. I'd never really had a conversation with a stranger before. My family didn't let me. They thought someone might take me away.

"Umm..." he sighed. "Well, I guess I'll get going--"

A sudden loud roar rose out from behind the mountains. The man hung his head and said under his breath, "Damn."

"What? What is that?" I questioned.

"Well..."

I saw dark wings block the late day sun from my eyes and a spiky tail point to the ground as an enormous figure appeared above the man and I. Only one word could come to my mind as he scaly beast began to spit fire from its mouth. "Dragon!" I cried.
