They told him not to, they had told him from a young age that the monsters that hide there were bad, all of them. From then on he had always slept with the light on because even the slightest sliver of darkness would bring the monsters. Everyone believed this, monsters were bad was how they lived. One day the boy walked towards his room, he noticed the lights in his room were off and it was completely dark. He quickly ran to find his father, his father was sitting with his mother at the dining room table. He went up to his father and told him that his lights were off. His father quickly rushed up the stairs to his room and locked the door. He told him not to enter that room unless it was daytime, so that the boy could then turn on the lights. The next week there was no sun and the boy missed going in his room. His parents both had work and they left him home alone, he decided he was going to go into his room. The door creaked as he opened it, he inched his way inside and felt the wall for the light switch. He kept feeling the wall trying to find the switch when his foot brushed against something leathery. He froze, he was about to scream when he saw a pair of green eyes looking at him from the floor. They didn't look threatening, they looked curious. The boy reached forward more and found the light switch and flipped it on. The monster was still there, it hadn't moved. The boy was very confused, he had always been told that monsters didn't like light but here was this monster sitting there looking at him. The boy tilted his head to the side, the monster did the same. The monster stood up on all fours and the boy fell backwards, it was huge. It walked over to him, got very close to him and looked at the boy's face. The boy closed his eyes and looked away, afraid the monster would eat him. But it didn't, it just stood over him breathing, examining him like it had never seen a human up close before. The boy opened his eyes and looked at the monster. It moved away from him so the boy could sit up, the boy quickly sat up and ended up being face to face with the monster. He moved his hand to touch the monster's head and the monster's eyes went red. He told it he wouldn't hurt it. The monster seemed to understand him and his eyes went back to green. The boy put his hand out again and the monster watched as the boy's hand went to touch the top of its head. The boy started to pet the monster, the monsters eyes closed and it started to meow like a cat. The boy felt around the large ears that looked more like flaps and the monster laid down and rolled onto its back. The boy was confused at first then figured out that the monster wanted his stomach rubbed. The boy played with the monster all day until his parents came home. But the next day when his parents went to work the monster came back to play. This happened for years and when the boy was old enough to live on his own the monster came with him, the boy made a room in his house that was completely dark so his monster could live there in peace. The day that he met that monster the boy realized that not all monsters are bad.
