"Han, please pass the butter."

"Here, mom."

"Thank you."

"So how was job hunting today?"

"Terrible as usual," I sighed, staring at my dinner. I had been trying to get a job since I had graduated from high school almost six months ago, but I had had no luck.

"Listen Jeonghan, we have to tell you something." My dad, who was awfully quiet that night, announced suddenly.

"What is it?" I asked.

"You are engaged."

I could only stare at him, not fully comprehending his words. "Huh?"

"You're getting married." He repeated calmly.

"What are you talking about?" I frowned. "Dad, this isn't funny."

"It isn't meant to be, Jeonghan!" He raised his voice.

I looked at him. "Stop looking at me like that."

"And how do you want me to look at you? What are you even...? I can't get married!" I exclaimed.

"Do you remember the man that came for dinner last week? Kim Mingyu?" My mom intervened.

I nodded. Of course, I remembered. I had arrived home that day and a mysterious blue van had been parked outside our house, with an equally mysterious man in a black suit standing beside. I had been very scared and had hurried inside, where my parents had been eating dinner with a handsome young man, who they had introduced to me quickly after sending me away to my room as if I was a child.

"Yeah?"

"He's... The leader of a gang we borrowed money from years ago." My mom explained, and I paled.

"You told me you had gotten money from my aunt in England!"

"Uee died years ago," My dad said.

"We haven't been able to give them our monthly payment since four months ago since I lost my job. We have been paying all we can without starving you, but their threats became worse each time."

"I don't like where this is going..."

"Until Kim came to pay us a visit. I still don't get it, his gang consists of at least a hundred people and he has contacts everywhere. Our debt is nothing to him." My mom sighed, containing her tears. "And then he saw you and... a few days ago he called..."

My dad continued for her. "He said he wanted you. You and then our debt would be forgiven. And if we don't comply, he said he'd kill us all."

I only sat there, frozen. My mom was crying by then and my dad was taking her hand on the table and trying to soothe her down. Were they seriously going to... give me to a mobster? How could they borrow money from dangerous criminals in the first place? I rose from the table and ran to my room. My cat, a tiny tabby kitten with blue eyes stared at me curiously when I slammed the door shut.

"Kir, we're never leaving this room," I told him and let myself fall to the bed.

Sadly, I wasn't able to keep my promise. After a sleepless night of panic and disbelief and almost a whole day of refusing to eat or open my door, my dad grew exasperated and unlocked it using a knife.

"A car has come to pick you up." He told me after turning the light on.

"What? Now?" I sat up, my heart racing.

"Yes. They said they can give you half an hour to pack whatever you want to take with you."

"Are we seriously going to do this?" I murmured.
