Alex's POV:
I wake up staring at my own body on a hospital bed. I'm covered in wires and other things. Mom, Dad, and Zayn are hugging and crying. They're talking about how much they're going to miss me.
"Guys, why do you miss me? I'm right here."
They say nothing. I wave my hands in their faces. "Hello? Mom, Dad, why can't you hear me?" I said.
I don't understand why my own parents either are ignoring me or can't see or hear me. I feel alone. I leave the hospital room through the door which is left propped open.
Max, my Mom's bodyguard, was standing guard by the door. He was looking into the room. I swear I saw him wipe a tear from his eye.
"Max, can you hear me?" I say.
Again, there is no response. Trust my mom to think up a prank this elaborate. I remember that time she pranked her old manager. She recorded the whole thing and sent it to me immediately after. If my mom put that much effort into a prank, then this does sound like her.
I head down the vast hallways filled with sick children and teens, their families crying over them. This is so sad. I make a mental note to get my mom to come back with me to visit these sick kids.
I look into this boy's room who looks asleep but after reading the sign on his door I find out that he's in a coma. There is a boy who looks exactly the same as him, except he's awake and standing over the boy on the bed.
"Hello? Can you hear me?" I say.
"Yes I can. Why wouldn't I be able to?" The boy says.
"How come you can hear me and no one else can?" I say.
"Because I'm just like you. I'm going to die so you are going to die too. I guess in a way we're like ghosts. By the way, my name is Jamie. What's your name?" Jamie says. .
"My name's Alex. What do you mean I'm going to die?" I say.
"Well Alex, we only project ourselves in spirit form when we are on life support, or in comas, or something like that. The only reason we do that is so we can say our final goodbyes." Jamie says.
"How can we say our final goodbyes when no one can hear us?" I say.
"You can move things. You can pick up a pen. Write a goodbye letter or drop something to give your family a sign that you're there." Jamie says.
Just then, the machines hooked up to the actual Jamie flatlines. "Bye Alex. You're stronger than you think. Try to stay alive, if not for me then for your family." Jamie says.
Then this bright white light appears. Jamie appears to float towards it. Nurses and doctors run through Jamie and the light, stopping at Jamie's lifeless body.
They try to revive him, but it's too late. He has already passed on to the light. The light shrinks up and disappears. A tear slips out of my eyes. I know I only just met him, but he taught me so much in that short time.
I go back to my hospital room. I dig around in my mom's purse until I find paper and a pen. They don't notice me. They're too busy looking at my limp form.
As soon as I pick the pen up, I drop it. Guess I'm not used to this whole ghost thing. But that gets their attention. Demi is obsessed with ghosts.
Demi glances towards me. Finally! I pick the pen and Demi's eyes get wide.
"Wilmer, are you seeing this?" Demi says.
"Um, yes. Should I be scared?" Wilmer says.
I pull a piece of paper out of Demi's purse and set it on the floor. All three of them are gaping at me. I actually think this is real because there is no way all of them could be acting that good.
I write on the paper, "It's Alex."
Everyone looks shocked. "Alex, are you alright?" Demi says.
"Of course I'm fine Mom. I'm trapped somewhere where no one can hear me or see me." I write.
"OK. How can we tell if you're being sarcastic if all you can do is write on paper and we can't see or hear you?" Wilmer says.
"Well of course I'm being sarcastic. How else would I be able to communicate?" I write.
"She is being sarcastic. I know this because she's my daughter and I know her better." Demi says.
Then the doctor comes in and says, "Sorry to interrupt, but time's up. It's time to pull the plug."
