Chapter one

(Ulric's pov)

"How many pack members are still missing files?" I ask Jarric as he shuffled through some papers with me. The last two days have been depressing, and very hectic. As the alpha now, I had to look after my pack, and lead them. As much as I wanted to go out and look for my mate with the scout groups I put on the job, I just couldn't with my broken leg. It had been set in a real cast yesterday, and DR told me that it wouldn't be taken off for about two to three weeks, depending on how much I walked with the cast on. Just because I was a werewolf and healed fast, didn't mean large injuries don't take some time to heal.

"Well, as of now we have only 117 files on members, and I've counted 123 in our pack. So we need to get 6 more it seems." Jarric told me and placed some papers into a new file. My father had been a terrible organizer, and so didn't have a system to keep track of the pack what so ever. He didn't even have files on them all. I looked through the ones he did have and put Jarric on the job to update them and get files on members who didn't have one.

"Well, let's get files on them then." I look at Jarric with tired, sad eyes. These past days have been sleepless, heartbreaking, and lonely. Not having Ash here was like missing half of myself. I missed his voice, his scent, his soft golden eyes; just him all together. I filled my days with pack work to try to get my mind off him to keep the worry down; but it never worked. All I could think of was his wellbeing. Was he being treated well? Fed? Was he tied up? Beaten? Was the baby he carried ok? That's all I could worry about every waking moment.

"Alright." Jarric looked at me and sighed. "Let's go outside and get some air, Ulric. We both need a small break."

I nod. "Alright...hand me my crutches." He does so and I stand, walking with him out of the office and down the hall. "This wait is killing me Jarric..."

"I know Ulric, but you have to give it time. The scouts are doing their best, and it's only been two days; that's minus the one you were asleep. So technically three..."

"Nice track on time there." I joke ever so slightly, and sigh again.

"If you keep sighing like that, your soul will escape." Jarric looked at me and set a hand on my shoulder. "Listen, we will find him, and when we do, he will be just fine. Ash can take care of himself you know. He isn't a baby."

"I know but I can't help imagine what is being done to him. He is my mate Jarric and I'm sure if Layla was the one taken you'd be going crazy with worry, too."

"True, you got me there..." We finally make it outside and I drop myself into a deck chair, Jarric sitting beside me. "Tomorrow, we need to go to ash's human family. They need to know."

I sighed and nod. "Alright..." I've been avoiding that at all costs. They would all hate me, and I didn't want that; but I knew they needed to know. We sat there for a moment, just looking out at the forest. After a few minutes, a group of 4 wolf stepped out of the trees. A deep gray one with a black strip on his tail stepped forward and shifted.

"Alpha we have confirmed that Boris is heading west. If he is really fallowing the scent of the vampires, which for some reason only he can smell, then we should fallow him. But..." Parker trailed off and lowered his head. I raised an eyebrow at him.

"But what Parker?"

He looks back up at me. "Alpha, why can Boris smell the vampires but not us? This makes me think that Boris is helping the vampires. He could be trailing us off course or-"

"Don't you ever say that Boris is in league with the vampires again!" I snap, cutting him off and suddenly becoming hostile. "Not only is Boris my mate's older brother, who saved him from the vampires when my mate was just a baby, but he is also one of the only few of our pack that has actually smelled a vampire!" I take a deep breath and sigh. "Our pack comes from an area with few vampires clans. The last time our pack was ever attacked was before my father was even born. I'm slightly ashamed to say this, but I highly doubt you or anyone else in our pack has ever smelt a vampire before. The only reason some of our older trackers know what they are searching for is because they were sent to other packs for training and have had run ins with the blood sucking beasts."
