The days were hectic as prom neared the senior class, letting reality hit them. It wasn’t hectic in the sense that everything wasn’t ready-- everything was perfect -- but the fact that every one didn’t have a date yet. Only people that had dates were couples and even then, they couldn’t agree on a color scheme. All of the others were running around asking people; most from other schools.
One boy, however, had his eyes set on this one girl he had just met some weeks ago. To him, she was perfect in every way possible and he wanted her to be with him for a night that she would never remember. He brushed his hair in the boys’ bathroom mirror one more time before leaving and going to go find her. He was nervous because he was never the one to ask anyone out, they always came to him. However, she was different than all the other girls: she wasn’t pressed.
“There she goes.” he said to himself as he fixed his red bowtie and straightened up his black suit vest and made sure that his shoes were on point before he continued to walk over to her. She was smiling hard to her girls over their prom dates and dresses and after parties. This was her favorite part.
“Hey Kira.” Maurice said with a smile and a wink in his eye. Kira looked at him and smiled. “Haaaaaay.”
“I wanted to know if I could take....to prom.” he mumbled and she caught on. Nailyn, on the other hand, didn’t and that was perfect.
“Of course you can.” and she took the flowers out of his hand, smelling them. The others giggled profoundly, except for Nailyn, who was hotter than a jalepeno pepper at the moment.
“Great! See you Friday, I’ll come around 8:30. The color is Royal Blue.” He said that, waved bye to the girls, and went on with class. Kira smelled the flowers once more and looked at Nailyn, who wanted to kill her.
“Why such the murderous face?” Kira said to Nailyn, who’s steam you can see come out of her ears. Nailyn was too through because she thought that her and Maurice were going to go to prom together. Even though he had only been there for a month, there was a connection between them two. One so strong that it felt like they knew each other for years. Their date...was one of the best she’d ever had.
“Nothing... just nothing. I’m gonna go take a walk real quick. I’ll see y’all later.” She said, mopey and a bit saddened. Prom was 3 days away and she didn’t know what to do, who to ask, what to wear. She could get any boy in this school but she only wanted one.
Maybe two, he wasn’t being so...distant.
“Speak of the Devil.” she said as Daniel apporached her. She smiled slightly and gave him a tight hug. She hadn’t seen him for a while and had wondered why. “What’s been up with you lately?”
“Nothing much, needed to clear my head so I figured why not take this passageway? But I see that you need to do the same.” She nodded and he looked at her eyes. Tears were at the brm but didn’t fall, and her sighs were heavy. “What’s wrong Lynnie?” That sounded like music to her ears. She looked at him and closed her eyes. They sat down on the nearest bench that showed the fountain that their school had close to the Quad.
“Why do you like Lizzie?” His eyes gauged open as the words left her mouth. Thoughts ran through his head at that one simple question. Does she know about that night? How did she find out? Is she mad? Did Lizzie tell her? Oh sweet jesus, this is about to get hectic I know it... His mind rambled on and on. “I asked you a question Dig, I do expect an answer.”
“How do yo-”
“I peep the way you look at her. Always do. It used to be the same look you gave me.”
“Nailyn...look it’s hard.”
“It’s not that hard. I need to know right now if you like me or her more.”
“Nailyn, I told you that I love you.”
“But do you love her more is my question.” He was dumbfounded. He had to sit here and make a hasty choice that could possibly make or break a friendship. “So what is it?”
*~*
“Are you ready?” the voice on the phone asked.
“I don’t even know. In both cases I really don’t know.”
“Well you need to be. That’s why you transferred, to be successful and not be a hoodrat.” He sighed on the phone and rubbed his eyes. “It’s more complicated than that and you know it. It’s going to follow me around for the rest of my life. Do you really want that?”
“If you don’t want to end up in jail, or even worse dead, then you’re going to listen to me and follow what I say. Now I better not catch you doing anything outside of what I tranferred you here for or so help me I will beat you senseless. You hear me?”
“Yeah I hear you. It’s going to be hard.”
“I know baby boy, but that’s the struggle in this world. You gotta do it. Now I gotta go, bruh. You got this?”
“Yeah I got it, man. See you soon. You better be here to watch me walk across that stage.”
The man on the other line scoffed. “You damn right I’m gonna be there.” and they hung up.
Thoughts rambled through his head as he feared the days coming closer. His life was going to be changed forever once he accepted it.
