Two weeks. It's been two weeks since Maliah's sisters had entered the school since the death of their sister. The sister that has probably been taking it the hardest is her twin, Mara. The two sisters were identical aside from the fact that Maliah was the taller one.
Mara walked upstairs to the hallway her and her friends sit in during breakfast and lunch. She opened the big wooden door and walked past it as she made her way to her usual spot. She had her white tainted headphones in, blocking out the sound of those around her. The morning was quiet, and depressing more than ever. Audrey, one of their friends, she looked around wondering where Maliah was. It had been weeks since she had gotten to speak to Maliah, both through social media and in person. Audrey would've asked Mara, but she didn't want to bother her, she simply put her headphones in.
'She's probably sick, or she'll be here later...' Audrey thought to herself, hoping her best friend was okay. Minutes later the bell had rung, and school had begun.
When the bell for third period had finally rung. Mars, Audrey, and Ela exited their second period, and walked up the stairs. When they walked into the language hallway Audrey scanned her eyes for Maliah since they had the same third period, but she didn't find her.
'She's probably sick then...' Audrey thought to herself. The three dropped Ela off to her class before Mara and Audrey parted ways to go to their classes. Audrey stepped into the chemistry class and sat in the third column, fourth row from the teacher's lab table. She sighed as she listened to her teacher yap on and on about ion and covalent bonds and other things none of the students are going to need in their future as adults. But her mind wasn't focused on that, her mind was focused on Maliah.
"She didn't even text me good morning... she always texts me good morning." She muttered to herself quietly. Audrey let out a deep sigh before giving her attention to her teacher.
When it was lunch Audrey was the first to enter their hallway, usually she's under Maliah's arm, but not today. She rested her backpack on the ground before sitting herself down, crossing her legs. She looked to the empty space on her right before taking her phone out. It wasn't long after til Mara, Ela and the rest of the gang came to the hallway. Audrey silently listened as everybody was talking to one another. She took out her water bottle and took a few gulps before capping it. She tapped on Mara's knee.
"Hey...do you know where Maliah is?" Audrey asked.
"What?" Mara asked, Mara pulled out her other headphone, not being able to hear Audrey clearly. "Sorry I couldn't hear you."
"Do you know where Maliah is?" Audrey repeated. Mara's facial expression when from focused to uncomfortable.
"She...she's gone." Mara said solemnly.
"Gone?" Audrey tilted her head. "What do you mean by gone?" She asked.
"Gone as in she's gone...she...she died." Mara said, fixing her jacket.
"What!?" Everybody asked, listening to the conversation. Audrey felt her heart sink in. She felt as if she had just been hit by a truck.
"She's dead...?" Audrey muttered to herself, just saying those words hurt. She could feel her cheeks turning slightly red. "How?" She asked softly. Mara let out a soft sigh and rubbed her eye.
"It was suicide... she cut herself too deep." Mara responded. Once everyone heard that they got over to hug Mara tightly. There was a moment of silence when everyone pulled back. Audrey felt a tear going down her cheek and wiped it with her sleeve, but she made it seem as if she was fixing her hair. She looked down to her phone and started to reread her conversations with Maliah from previous weeks, scrolling down to the bottom she looked to the last message sent from Maliah to her.Maliah:Bye
Audrey's entire day was gloomy after that. She had no interest in her classes no matter how important they were. She didn't wanna be at school, she didn't wanna be around people whatsoever. What she wants is to have Maliah by her side everyday like how it's suppose to be.
When the final bell rang she exited the building with Ela. The two met up with Mara and walked towards their buses. Ela was the first to leave. Mara and Audrey stood quietly outside of Audrey's bus for a while. Mara finally hugged Audrey goodbye and the two departed, making their ways into their buses. Audrey got into the seat she sits in all the time and continued to go over her conversations with Maliah as she listened to music. She looked out the window as the bus started, her eyes gazing at the hellhole they call school.
