Audrey walked silently to her house. Headphones in, music blasting. It was just her and her thoughts now. When Audrey entered her house she quickly took her shoes off and put them off to the side. Her mother tried to get her attention, but Audrey had no intentions of speaking to her mother whatsoever. She wasn't in the mood. Audrey entered her room and rested her backpack beside her bed as she sat upon it. She held her phone close to her as she repeatedly went over her conversations with Maliah.
"Why wouldn't she tell me she was upset?" Audrey said softly. She wasn't sure how to feel at the moment. "Should I be mad because she didn't tell me? Was I not as important to her as I thought I was?" Audrey began to question herself as she went through her drawers and pulled out the gifts Maliah had given her in the past. Most of it was just jewelry, but it still meant something to her. The necklace with the ship, a swirled necklace with 'Now and Forever' written on it , and a bracelet, and so on. Audrey cried softly as she laid everything out in front of her as if she was choosing the one that had the most meaning to it. She wiped her cheek and simply stared down at them. "Did she not care anymore...?" She asked herself as she put the items away, keeping the swirled necklace in hand as she laid down, resting her head on her pillow, holding it tightly to her chest. All the thinking and crying she had done was starting to give her a headache. She let out a sigh before sitting up and picking up her backpack, beginning to do her homework as if it would make a difference on her emotions.
When she got hungry she came downstairs and walked into the kitchen. Her mom glared at her as she entered the kitchen.
"Audrey, are you okay?" She asked.
"I'm fine...I'm just hungry." Audrey lied as she took a small bag of chips from the pantry and a bottle of water. Audrey went back upstairs into her bedroom and locked the door behind her. She fanned her face a bit so she didn't feel so warm.
Audrey spent the rest of her time watching horror movies on her laptop and eating her chips silently, but the thought of Maliah stayed in the back of her mind. She stayed up all night, not a single ounce of sleep was given for her body to rest. Finishing an entire series in one sitting, she sighed. Audrey threw away her trash and empty water bottle before shutting down her laptop and laying down, pulling her blanket over herself. She grabbed her phone from underneath her pillow and opened up her messaging app, reading over their conversations once more. She began typing as if she was expecting a response.Audrey:Come back...please?
Maliah:Oops, it looks like Maliah's phone has been turned off/disconnected for a while. We'll deliver your message when they connect again.
Audrey:No! Please, just please come back!
Maliah:Oops, it looks like Maliah's phone has been turned off/disconnected for a while. We'll deliver your message when they connect again.
Audrey:You promised you would never leave me!
Maliah:Oops, it looks like Maliah's phone has been turned off/disconnected for a while. We'll deliver your message when they connect again.
Audrey:Stop saying that!
Maliah:Oops, it looks like Maliah's phone has been turned off/disconnected for a while. We'll deliver your message when they connect again.
Audrey groaned in frustration at the repeated response. Warm tears began to drip down from the side of her face and down her cheek. She didn't bother wiping them away, she just let warm droplets stream down her face.
"You promised you wouldn't leave me..." Audrey said softly. After a while she began to cry harder, drenching her pillow case and that's how she spent the rest of her nights that month. Bawling her eyes out, mourning at the thought of her best friend not being alive. Audrey was no longer able to hold her cold hands, surprise hug her from behind, she couldn't even hear her voice anymore. The one thing that killed Audrey the most is the fact that she never got the chance to tell Maliah she loved her.
